Perl: clever or stupid?

It is pissing it down, but Perl the fat cat is bored and wants to go out. So, she has gone round all the doors and windows, checking that it is raining outside all of them.

Polo thinks this shows Perl is quite stupid. I think it shows she is quite clever, though missing a few basic facts.

My reasoning is that Perl knows that the world is different if you go out of a different door. The scenery is different, the smells are different, and sometimes it is sunnier if you go out of the South-fecing back door, and shadier outside the North-facing front door. At night, it is sometimes light outside the back door (if the rear light is on) but dark outside the front. Sometimes it *is* wet on only one half of the house (if someone is cleaning the windows with the hosepipe).

Given this, it seems quite sensible to not assume that weather will necessarily be consistent around the house, when so many other factors are variable, but to go and check.

When it was raining and he wanted to go out, my dog would sometimes stand beneath the light switch, barking, as if we could turn off the rain for him.

I agree with you. I think it's a sign of intelligence. She's being a good scientist, and checking all the evidence before jumping to a hasty conclusion based on mere assumption.

Our dog Chica used to get bored in the absence of our father, and trot purposefully from window to window of our third-floor apartment, looking for something to bark at. If she couldn't see anything from the windows, she would also go onto the balconies and jump up to look out. (When our dad was home, she would curl up angelically beside him.)

I needed to pop out to the shops at lunchtime and when I looked out of my office window it was dry. However when I got to the front door, it was raining. I therefore think Perl had the right idea and I wish I'd been bothered to go back to my office and get my brolly before going out, as now I have frizzy hair :-(
