Meat market...

Farmer's markets have something of a reputation for being places where you buy food that you hope might be better quality than at a supermarket, but will definitely not be cheaper.  So I am triumphant that the beef mince bought from a local farmer at a market yesterday was three quid a kilo cheaper than the beef mince in the Coop!

This is useful at the moment, because Az has decided that he can no longer bear to eat any form of dog food, not even the special tinned stuff that smells (to me) like a good stew and is presumably made lovingly by hand by rosy-cheeked Lincolnshire virgins, given the price of it.  I am just now stewing him some ox kidneys.  80p for 2 monster kidneys!   Win!

Win, win indeed!

I aim to sell my beef more cheaply than supermarket stuff even though its the real McCoy ie homebred pedigree Dexter, naturally reared, hung for three weeks, butchered locally etc etc! It would cost three times the price to buy it joint by joint from a rare breed farm shop or even a farmer's market, but the downside is I can only supply it a couple of times a year and it can only be bought in bulk on the same day I collect from the butcher. I have some long-standing loyal customers, but it's still a challenge to find enough people prepared to fork out for a bulk deal.

I usually keep back a few packs of mince to treat the dogs and for getting worming pills down them. They go absolutely crazy for it!Pity we don't live nearer!

Good timing! My last trip to the butcher this year was Friday two days ago! I always put a few steaks and joints in the freeze [just in case] so I'll reserve them until I hear from you. Have a great trip.

This was only bog-standard Hereford, I'm afraid... The storage is the problem. I really should find somewhere to put a big freezer, then I could buy at least a sheep at a time!
