The taste of this country continues to find new depths to plumb.

I can cope with tasteless. It's the sheer useless pointlessness that has gasted my flabber.

I decided last year that USB Christmas trees were a sign that our civilisation had descended so deeply into decadence that we deserved to be culled by a passing plague, with a few sadder-but-wiser survivors left to rebuild a new civilisation devoid of useless Christmas gifts. I now think we need to be wiped out completely by a passing asteroid. Let the slugs and the worms have the world. I bet they can build a more tasteful civilisation than we ever managed.

:-D I've seen these advertised on several websites this year.

Why? Just... why?!

Because people need a pointless present for their Office Secret Santa gift...

For the cost of that & postage, they could get a nice box of chocs. Or a bottle of wine. Or a nice soy candle. Or a book. Or even socks, damnit!

Dull, perhaps, but so much more life-enhancing than having your pc shagged by a small plastic horrible *thing*!

It's something about the USB interface. There were never this many weird gadgets for centronics or RS-232 ports (there are two phrases you don't seen any more - does anyone else remember the Spitting Image song "RS-232 interface lead"?). I've also seen USB mince pies (something which prompted CustomPC magazine to start an annual group lab test of mince pies - this year's winner: M&S Luxury Recipe Deep Filled, with the wooden spoon going to Duchy Originals Organic Mini Mince Pies), USB hamster wheels, USB missile launchers, USB foot warmers and a USB pencil sharpener.

I'm considering a USB missile launcher to dissuade those people who insist on sneaking up behind me.

I keep nearly knocking them over, when they stand quietly until I notice them (despite the fact that they're hiding silently!), which tends to be when I hit print, swing the chair round and stand up to go and get the document, not realising some idiot has placed themselves as an obstacle behind me...

The whole "I will advertise my presence by remarking on something you've just written" is another rant altogether...

Did RS-232, etc, carry power as well as data? That seems the crucial difference...
