When I moved into this house, the phoneline was dead as a doornail, which rather annoyed me. It took me four calls on separate days to different BT departments (initially from a payphone ten minutes' walk away and then from my shiny new mobile) to get them to acknowledge that there was a problem. Once I spoke to the right people they were extremely helpful (as was the engineer who turned up) -- it was just getting to them past all the gatekeepers!
