Little Person, Big Noise

First sail of the season with the little one aboard. Warmish, sunny—just enough to call it spring. She chose bravery, or mostly chose it, which at her size counts as a full commitment.

Then I furled the jib.

The sail thrashed against the wind, a violent, snapping racket I'd long stopped registering. But her face told me everything. To a four-year-old, that sound isn't routine—it's something alive and angry. She watched the flapping canvas like it might break free entirely.

It's humbling, seeing the boat through her eyes. The noise I'd trained myself to ignore was, to her, the loudest thing in the world.

The problem with this book is that I'm French.

Alix E. Harrow's The Everlasting is a novel about deconstructing a country's founding myth. Said myth is inspired by Arthuriana and, especially, Joan of Arc. I'm not against Joan of Arc motifs (hell, it's one of the things I love about Margaret Rogerson's Vespertine). I am also pro deconstructing founding myths! Including French founding myths, including Joan of Arc.

However.

However, I think if you're going to be deconstructing a country's myths it should be your own country. Whether its because the book is in English or the author is USAmerican or the fictional country is England-coded (the main narrator so far (25%) is called "Owen Mallory") or a combination but this feels particularly disrespectful. Leave Jeanne alone and go bother George Washington or something.

Reading, Listening, Watching

Reading: I've just started Frazer Hines' novelisation of Evil of the Daleks. Given he acknowledges Mike Tuckers and Steve Cole (purveyors of fiction), I do wonder how much of a hand he actually had in it. Good so far, but I'm only just starting Chapter 2.

Listening: I've been listening through the Missing Episodes Podcast. These started out really good but the one I just listened to on The Highlanders felt self-indulgent and over-long. Sufficiently so that I wondered once or twice if the presenters were drunk.

Watching: I was in Cyprus last week, and I'm now catching up and marking, so not much. Before I left we were watching Masterchef. B. is in Japan so it will be four weeks until we pick that up again...

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What kinds of organizers do you like to hold your arts and crafts supplies?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

Last days.

In our house, we have a quiet language for the clothes our little one is outgrowing. When something is getting snug, we call it a “last day.” It’s our gentle signal — to ourselves more than to her — to savour the moment before the outfit is peeled away for good. A toddler doesn’t grasp the symbolism, of course, but we do. “Last day” is really about us watching time accelerate, stitched into hems and cuffs. These tiny farewells remind us how quickly the days move, and how precious it is to notice them as they pass.

I saw the Project Hail Mary movie and I really enjoyed it. Stupid power of friendship (and science), making me cry.

There's a line at one point about Grace's former girlfriend now being with someone named Mark, and in my head it's Mark "The Martian" Watney because that would be fucking hilarious.

I made a friend in Hermitcraft fandom. After many months they got into a new fandom, one I wasn't familiar with.
Me, not thinking, trying to tempt them into writing more HC: You could write a crossover!
A few months later, they start writing a crossover, I volunteer to beta. So of course to understand the story I need more information, and they start sending me links and stuff...
Me, finally: oh. This was a trap. /o\

There are two challenges on [community profile] allbingo this month, but realistically I don't have time for both, so I've decided to go for the Hazbin Hotel Challenge, using Places prompts, but going with a Pride theme.

Quick note that post-by-email and comment-by-email is (sometimes?) failing silently without actually posting right now! I'm pretty sure this is related to last night's shenanigans and will be fixed once Mark can finish the full fix for it, which he's working on, but if you've posted or replied by email in the last 24 hours, fish it out of your sent folder to check if it posted!

EDIT: This should be fixed as of around 7AM EDT! We *believe* everything that was stuck in the plumbing has been sent along to your journal or the comment thread it was meant for; it's definitely not where it was stuck anymore, at least.

Thank you for your engagement with this community during the past month!

Here is the tolkienshortfanworks challenge for June.

Thematic prompt: Drink.

Optional quotation prompts (all from LOTR):

1)
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

2)
...he drained a cup that was filled with a fragrant draught, cool as a clear fountain, golden as a summer afternoon.

3)
Your Ladyship, all we want is light and water: just clean water and plain daylight, better than any jewels, begging our pardon.

The formal prompt is: epistolary.
Your prompt fill should be a letter or include a letter.

(This is inspired by the Silmarillion Epistolary Week, which has just started on Tumblr.)

As usual, these two prompt sets can be filled separately or combined.

Usual reminder that in order to post the fill to this community or to the related collection on AO3 (linked in a sticky post at the top), the fanwork can only have a word count up to 1000 words and must be linked to a Tolkien fandom.
Rec lists and podfics can be posted as fills for thematic prompts, as long as the fanworks concerned meet those conditions.

Also we continue to welcome other pieces unrelated to any challenge, of course, including cross-posts and older stories, as long as they meet the criteria!

Happy June 1!

Just to please [profile] passerbyp, myself and two random Brasilians* one of whom was in possession of a rental car went to see a second shipwreck off the coast of Cyprus, MV Demetrios II. This was rather further from the shore so harder to get a good photo of.

A rocky shore, some way off in a slight haze is the silhouette for a cargo ship.

*not that random, I actually know them pretty well.
