We just spent an hour and a half searching for the manual for our router, because I'd set up wireless security but not made a note of the wep password, and wanted to add another machine.

I'd completely forgotten that I'd decided that because we have wired machines on the network too, it wasn't worth writing down (and losing) the 24 bit wireless password on the manual, because it's a pw that is easier to reset than to transcribe, and the control panel is self-explanatory anyway: all I needed to do was use a wired machine to access the cp.

Finally found a backup router conf file on my hard disk and remembered this decision (which seemed so self-evident at the time). Bah! I wish my brain worked better. I only set this up in July. My brain makes me angry. I'm sure it used to work better than this.

Now, what was my name again...?

Oh dear. First sign of senility. Before you know it, you'll be so far gone that you put salt in your coffee, and things like that...

Bunn, don't bother with wireless. Just trail wires and things through all the furniture, so wherever you sit there's a power lead and patch cable all handy. We have the settee wired up like that - makes life much simpler :-)

That's our current system, only I keep tripping over the wires. But Malaheed reckons it's too much work to go wireless for the benefit of my laptop, given that *he* would have to do all the techie stuff to make it so. Grumble.

Ah, the trick is to hide the wires. We have a cable running through the wall from the armoury (where the router is) down to the living room, just behind the settee and near a power point. That then means the power cable and network cable can go over the back of the settee and down behind the cushions, so all you need do is grab the laptop and grope under the cushions for the cables, which come out of the front of the settee and therefore avoid legs altogether.

The potential downside is getting nine volts through you as you grope for the cables and grab the live power lead, but if you can't survive nine volts then you've probably been killed off by something else in our house before you get to sit down anyway.

Well, now I've sorted the wireless, and made a note of what I'd forgotten a) here and b) on a label on the router itself, we are back to happy wireless networking again. It would have been a 1-minute job if my brain was working.

Alas, it not being our house, we can't put things in the wall without the landlady's say-so, the getting of which would take months of pestering and nagging. But maybe we can find some solution to minimize the trailing anyway. I hadn't thought about just getting a few extra network cables.
