- Snowdrops are out in the sunnier spots, and budding in the shady ones

- The odd primrose is trying on a flower

- I had to wait in the lane as I drove home last night for two blackbirds that were conducting a savage life or death struggle to finish and get out of the way. (I entertained myself by humming the Captain Kirk Duelling In Cage With Giant Forks music. You know the bit I mean...)

- I found a newt outside our back door last night. (I think he was just hanging out in a newty manner, rather than waiting to burgle the place)

I hope all of this activity will not be rudely cut short. I know it's been cold, beasties, but it's only the start of Feb, we could have weeks of freeze to come yet!

We have snowdrops out too, by the way when would you reckon on trimming back a fig tree or bay bush before it all goes Sproing but bearing in mind we may still have frosts

Fig yes, as long as it's not in a real frost pocket - mine is trimmed right back against the wall and if I do lose any branches then it will come back from the roots.

Bay tree is an evergreen though and they tend to be more sensitive - and it shouldn't be that fast growing anyway. I'd be inclined to leave that and do it after the frosts are gone, if it were me.

I have flower buds on my raspberries! And my dog rose is budding. I hope they decide to have a second go at budding if this lot get caught by the cold.
