On the Lemsip box, the contents claims to treat:
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Blocked Nose
  • Body Aches and Pains
  • Sore Throat.

It does not mention:
  • That feeling as if the top of your head had come off and your brain had become filled with helium, and is now hovering about half a mile up, connected to your body only by the slowest and most tenuous connections.
  • Extreme enfeeblement of the upper arms, making one feel like a rather limp Tyrannosaurus Rex.
  • whatever that thing is that makes you rub your eyebrows.
  • Timeslip effects : sit down for 5 minutes, when you stand up it is three hours later
  • The proliferation of typos.

Hmm ... I'm not sure Lemsip is up to the job ... I prescribe whisky.

You think whisky cures typos? Hmm. I can give that a go... :-D

At the very least, it will make you not care about the typos.

If you find a cure for that, TELL ME!

Oh poor you. I like Wellinghall's suggestion, and lots of it!

Those first two, augh, they are the worst. I bet whiskey WOULD help. *nodnodnod* Hope you feel better!

Lemsip doesn't really alleviate symptoms. It just tastes so vile that the symptoms become less important in the grand scheme of things than pulling faces and saying 'bleah!'

Hope you soon feel better.

That feeling as if the top of your head had come off and your brain had become filled with helium

I get that from decongestants generally, which is why I haven't taken Lemsip since 1990.

Rather than Lemsip I'd have a large gin and fresh orange plus a couple of paracetamol.

Juniper is good for congestion & respiratory infections.
Orange has vitamin C
Paracetamol is generally good for aches, pains and fever
Alcohol is good for almost everything else ;-)

That said if it's viral in origin, then gargling with a peaty Islay malt would be good for killing it off, that or TCP. Personally I prefer TCP!

Hope you feel better soon.

I'm following Dr Wellinghall's instructions and dousing it in Highland Park whisky. My brain is still floating at the half-mile up level, but I feel quite cheery about it. :-D

That's interesting. I looooooooove me decongestants. In fact, I sometimes buy just the decongestant bit from Boots.

I can do the helium brain quite easily without their help, but an explosive nose is always such a *shared* woe... :-D

I find that if you pile real lemons in it and soak it in honey, the taste becomes much less noticeable.

When I was small, my father used to do this and also put whisky in it. I'm not sure this is really recommended though, particularly not for 7-year-olds... :-D

The only decongestant that doesn't give me the floaty-head feeling is pseudoephedrine, which is one of those drugs that's restricted for purchase in the States (you have to ask for it at the counter, and sign a book for it) because of the people who were buying large quantities to make batches of meth. (Really, why anyone would waste perfectly good pseudoephedrine on making meth is a mystery to me.) I think Lemsip has phenylephrine, which would explain the bad reaction -- whisky sounds the far better option.

It had not occurred to me that floaty head might be attributable to the treatment not the symptoms. I am going to try hot lemon with honey and whisky without the Lemsip, and see if it makes a difference.

Mind you, at the moment, I am simply slighty drunked. But that's still better than more-than-slightly colded.

I ALWAYS CARE ABOUT TYPOS!

Apart from in punctuation, because, really life is too damn short, panda or no bloody panda.

Yes, Lemsip has phenylephrine. Pseudoephedrine is available here, but I think you can only get it at a pharmacy.
