This is better, closer to my mind's eye version too (although once again looks much worse in the photo than in real life: note to self, examine camera settings). I think I need to work on the outer corners of the eyes, they don't look right (although arguably he should have a bit of a disconcerting stare, I'd like it to be disconcerting rather than 'hang on there is something drawn wrong here).
The colours are better in this version. I drew it in pencil, shaded in yellow ochre, and then did the skin with pinks made from a mixture of buf titanium and a bright red. Faces clearly have more bright red in their composition than I thought.

Photographing drawings is a pain. I've noticed that an itty bitty change in camera positioning can alter the whole angle the camera is "viewing" the art from, so to speak.

Date: 2015-06-20 08:54 am (UTC)I think the camera has picked out the edges of each tone more than the real painting shows, so for example, the edges of the eyes look harder and more not-right in the photo than the real painting. I think I need to do... something with white balance probably. May have to read the manual!

Date: 2015-06-21 08:18 pm (UTC)You also need a fairly narrow aperture, as otherwise the corners of the picture won't be fully in focus even though the centre is.
