I just randomly stumbled across the existence of the gaff-topsail schooner J.R. Tolkien  and the three masted schooner Loth Loriën

A little odd that the Loth Loriën, although pretty enough in her way, is nothing like as stunning a little ship as the  J.R. Tolkien, which I think just has THE most gorgeous lines.  Wow.

ETA Apparently the JR Tolkien was built in 1964 as a diesel electric tug called Dierkow, and it was only in 1995 that she was renamed and given sails. Can only applaud the transformation. http://www.classic-sailing.co.uk/vessels/j-r-tolkien

There's a few yachts in the local marinas with fun names. So far I've spotted a small yacht named Zelda, a larger one called Fram (probably for the polar exploration ship, but I know the name from Arthur Ransome's Winter Holidays), and a motor launch named Hullabaloo (that must be a Coot Club reference).

I still remember visiting the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo years ago and realising "Oh, so that's what the swan ships were meant to look like (with swan rather than dragon prows, of course)."

A great name for a white ship!

Viking ships are glorious, the shape of them! There's just something about a clinker-built boat that produces the most amazing lines.

When I was little, I had an orange Mirror dinghy called Tic-tac, because it was shaped very much like a sweet :-D

A heavy weight of significance for a ship to carry, though!

Great museum, isn't it.

Completely irrelevant comment -

When we were in Oslo seven years ago, we saw a small freighter that had disappeared during WWI ... then been found adrift a few years later. It was salvaged, put back into commission, and served as a freighter for another twenty odd years.

It then disappeared during WWII ... then was found adrift a few years later.

Yes, it was lovely, almost as interesting as the outdoor museum with traditional buildings.

I haven't been to that one, although I have been to equivalents in Iceland and Wales.
