I hadn't read this, but when the suggestion came up on the Silmarillion Writers Guild Discord that there should be a group readthrough, it seemed like a great excuse to get around to it, so i swiftly bought a cheap second-hand copy.

So far I like it a lot, so much so that I did a brief reading of the first bit of the The New Lay of the Völsungs... oh drat.  Apparently I can't upload MP3 files to LJ, only MP4?  Oh well, here's a link to it on Tumblr.


Reading schedule, if anyone fancies joining in: here's the Discord Invite*.

First week (6-12 April): Introduction, "Beginning", and  "Andvari's Gold" (unnumbered section and I, wth the relevant part of Commentary on the Lay of the Volsungs)

Second week (13-19 April): "Signy" to "Regin" (sections II - IV, wth the relevant part of Commentary on the Lay of the Volsungs)

Third week (20-26 April): "Brynhild" to "Strife" (sections V-IX, wth the relevant part of Commentary on the Lay of the Volsungs)

Fourth week (27 April - 3 May): Lay of Gudrun & Commentary

Fifth week (4 May - 11 May): Appendices A to C, including "Attila"

* I don't really know why this has ended up on Discord rather than anything else, but so it is.

I think it ended up on Discord because that's where it was organized.

I did think of suggesting to move it to Dreamwidth, but I was afraid we'd lose people on Discord who said they were interested in taking part. The idea originally came up in a conversation between Havisham and Dawn on Discord.

Yes, I had a similar thought. Have to go where the people are... I see you've started to do writeups, I thought I might try to at least produce a summary of the week too.

My recording has been unexpectedly well received : I'm thinking of doing the next bit, but that has dialogue so is a bit harder...

Yes, I'm not sure it's the easiest platform for it, but I guess it needs to be where the people are...

I realized this morning that I had posted about the read-along to the SWG community on DW and LJ, but there was no mention at all on my personal blog, which seemed a bit of an omission.
Not sure I could do a real write-up of the content of the discussion, at least at present. I'll be interested to see how you summarize the week!
The dialogue is more difficult to read, yes. It seems to be asking for different voices, but maybe that's not the only way it could be done?
