It's notable that the postcards are almost all from the Before Mining or After Mining periods. In the Before Mining time, this was indeed a very bucolic area, sending fruit and flowers down the river to be shipped to London: I imagine the Hobbits perhaps doing something similar shipping their fruit veg and tobacco to the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains, and getting back umbrellas and carriage-clocks in return!
