I have planted a couple of runner bean seeds (variety Painted Lady, a Heritage variety with particoloured flowers).

Runner beans are supposed to be half-hardy perennials, and I know of someone who has had success overwintering the roots and replanting in spring - so my cunning plan is to try planting them in the greenhouse and training the stems out through a hole and along the hazel hurdle I made the other week.

If I can just keep the roots warm enough, they should overwinter in the soil under my greenhouse staging, and be ready with early runner beans next year! Seems worth a try, at least.
