Things done, read, grown, etc
Jul. 27th, 2025 12:36 am- Enjoying the Rivers of London series of novels. I thought at first I would just read the first 3 to get a flavour for the setting, but in the end I've ended up reading as far as 'Among our Weapons' and will probably go on reading the rest as they come out.
- Took the RIB out with a couple of friends. Anchored just off Lindsway Bay, swam ashore, swam back. Water green and clear, sand yellow, a wonderful day. We went on to Dale (where we came back along the pontoon just as a small child tipped over a bucket of crabs: there were so many crabs! And they had some difficulty finding their way back to the water, so there was much scuttling and much leaping about of children) and Marloes in the sunshine. It was a lovely day.
- the fig tree that I took from a cutting of my Cornwall fig tree has finally fruited. Only a couple of figs this year, but very ripe and sweet.
- a man knocked on the door to say he was a tree surgeon doing work for a neighbour and did we want the sycamore at the end of the garden sorting.
We do in fact want it sorting since it is Large and perilously positioned on a wall and I'd much rather have a controlled reduction rather than have it go over with a crash in a storm, but the quote was eyewatering. Currently trying to find someone to give a second quote, though the reason the sycamore is still there is that previous attempts have been unsuccessful. I don't mind fighting a tree in the general way, but even I have to admit this one is rather out of my skillset.
- Went to a vintage car show (with Pp and Theo) at the local tiny maritime museum. Many shiny TVRs and Jaguars were there, plus a Morgan, a Morris Minor Traveller with impeccable woodwork, and an ancient beige Vauxhall which was clearly the apple of someone's eye for reasons that aren't clear to me.
— I don't seem to have posted anything about the buttons I carved for Tolkien Ekphrasis week, my part of a collaborative project , so I'm just going to link to the finished capelet (complete with buttons).
— I wrote a story about Gamil Zirak (and recorded it read out too) for the Silmarillion Writer's Guild Mereth Aderthad event, and made two pictures (1)(2) to illustrate presentations, into which I poured much thought at the time, so I'd better at least link the thoughts before they fall out of my head again.

Your buttons are lovely! I really like the unusual shape, and the carving is impressive!
Hooray for your MA fanworks! They're all lovely! (And your mention of Gamil Zirak reminded me that I made the illustration on the zine intro/contents page for your story, but then Varda finished her art in time, and the intro spread had some readymade art!
