I have just been down to get a bedframe from a poor oppressed delivery driver. He drove into the middle of the village and then got stuck. Our village is usually very quiet, but it appears 11:30am is Village Rushhour - cars and vans appeared from all directions. Various people were summoned from their houses to shift their cars, everyone had an opinion on how he should get out again...

The postman said to me, despite all evidence to the contrary: "I knew it would be your fault"! I think I may have offended the postman by keeping the recycling bin in the porch and putting many of the things he delivers straight into it....

The Saab cheerfully swallowed the bedframe, as it swallows all large objects. Often I consider buying a smaller car, then something like this happens and I realise how handy it is to have a Whalecar.

To add to the poor delivery guy's woes, when they filled his lorry, they put my item right at the front, so he had to get out about 6 mattresses and stand them in the rain before he could get out my boxes. This caused several people to leap from their cars and volunteer to help mattress-wrangle, but he declined all assistance. He also declined my offer to stand at the back and signal to help him get round the corner, so I left him to it.

I wonder if he's still there? He seemed adamant that he would be unable to get out using any of the 3 lanes available to him, so he may be. Oh well, if he moves in longterm, at least he has plenty to sleep on...

UPDATE 12:00 - the postman has been by and says that the delivery driver has managed to unstick himself and has gone. Hurray!

We get vans & trucks stuck round our road all the time, mainly because of people's horrendously bad parking. The bin men got stuck going round the corner by our house a few months ago, when I happened to be home from work. There was a furious banging on the door & when I opened it I was greeted with a command to move my car and a tirade about parking in a stupid place (across a corner, which I wil agree is a very stupid place to park!). It was very satisfying to be able to reply it wasn't my car, because I didn't own a car, though I got the impression he didn't believe me :-) I was then quizzed as to whose car it was, but I didn't recognise it, so couldn't help them. They spent some time trying to get out of the position they'd got themselves in and ended up bouncing several cars out of the way to escape...

A workman banged on my door a few weeks ago, and asked if I could move my car. I don't think he believed me when he said it wasn't mine, and I'm sure he didn't believe me when I said we didn't own a car.

That's very odd. Why would he think you would disavow all knowledge of the car? Unless it was a real total banger, surely anyone would rather be mildly embarrassed but get the chance to move the vehicle, than leave their car to be bumped, crunched and manhandled?

Our problem today was less poor parking, more trees, hills and walls. The people who moved their cars were parked perfectly properly on their own driveways, it was just that the van needed to infringe upon these to be able to move at all.

I think for some people it's beyond all the realms of possibility, that there may be a few people out there who don't own a car. Certainly that's the case round us, where it seems to be the norm to have at least 2 cars per house despite being a very poor area, and perfectly healthy people will drive to the station or into town, despite the fact it's only 10 minutes walk and it takes longer in the car as you have to find a parking space...

Knowing what the lanes are like around you I can well imagine it was the scenery that got in the way :-)

Odd how people struggle with things even marginally different to their own lives...

Even out here, I can think of one lady who has no car. Actually, my neighbour's son, OK, he *has* a car, that peugeot with the flat tires, but you've seen it, it's not moving any time soon, so that's 2 people...

And this *is* a place where life is a lot easier if you have one. You *could* walk to the nearest shop, but it's over an hour there and back again, and not unsteep... She gets the bus to the supermarket I think, and otherwise relies on lifts. There's a pet taxi service locally for vet visits too.

That's very odd: it's not like your house has got an obvious 'our space' area, so why on earth would they assume that a particular car was definitely yours?

I think they were just going on the approach of trying the front door nearest to the car first, assuming it must be something to do with us. People do try and park outside their houses if possible, but as you say there's no designated parking, so that's not always possible.

The fact that the Saab swallows "all large objects" and the fact that the delivery lorry is no longer there may, in fact, be related. Perhaps you should check...
