We buggered off to Charmouth for a bit.  Charmouth seems to be in the process of falling into the sea.  The coast path on both sides had fallen off, and on Saturday there was a huge storm which washed loads of dark grey clay into the sea.  It didn't seem to put the surfers off though.  I never knew you could surf on the Channel.

We went to Portland too, where philmophlegm had cod with black pudding, which was amazing!   And I had oysters for the first time.  They were OK but to be honest, what with all the cream and cheese and bacon I'm not sure I could taste them.  They seemed pretty much like big mussels really.   *considers*.  I wonder what ammonites would have tasted like.  Mind you, they probably pre-date garlic...

The hounds are now flat out from excessive beach and generally far more Outside than they are used to.

We popped in to Charmouth some years ago. I've got a lovely series of pictures showing a lovely, shiny sunny beach, full of people, then an approaching sky of pitch blackness, creeping up on the still-sunny beach, then a beach-load of people fleeing rapidly, then a deserted beach under a pitchy sky. Ever since then, I've liked to imagine that Charmouth no longer exists, consumed by apocalyptic awfulness.

I also remember going there with my Mum's geology evening class, who all attacked the cliffs with hammers and found very little, whereas I strolled on the high-tide line and found the best fossils of the day.

Gasp! Hammering into the cliffs? Pretty much every single sign and leaflet in the whole of Dorset has that as the number one thing that you absolutely MUST NOT DO!

Presumably put in response to rampaging geology evening classes in the 80s, hammering the poor cliff to pieces. I don't remember any notices back then, and the class went and did it with no sense of furtiveness, but my Mum didn't approve, which was why we strolled along the high tide line and found all the best stuff.

Possibly the cliffs weren't quite as precarious as they are now either.

You give your dogs things with oysters to eat? And I thought [livejournal.com profile] chainmailmaiden's cats were lucky! ;-)

Well not quite - there were generous servings of chips and loads of juice and cheesy sauce for each oyster, so I dunked some of the surplus chips in the juice for Mr Gourmet Lurcher to enjoy. I ate all the oysters!
