I have to admit this story made me laugh: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/7752446.stm

I could be wrong, maybe this would happen at airports elsewhere in the UK, but this does seem a bit, well,  Cornish.   I suspect elsewhere they'd have tried to rush it, ballsed it up and made a chaos that had to be smoothed over with spin : here we just say 'hey, what's a couple of weeks...'

I can hear my dad ranting about the mañana culture of the Westcountry now...

To paraphrase, "The Spanish have a word maƱana, meaning tomorrow. The Cornish have never felt the need to a term to express such urgency."

That's excellent! Is it yours or an adapted quotation - it has a faintly familiar ring but I can't work out why?

It's adapted, but I'm blowed if I can remember where from.

I wouldn't rush to blame the Cornish, it sounds like the boys from the RAF left them in the lurch at the last minute (although the Council probably only had a verbal agreement and should have got the boys in blue to sign something). Or possibly it was some bureaucrat at the MoD who decided he could find much better things to do with some ATC staff for a couple of weeks.

I thought that at first, but according to the more detailed reports in the local paper, they'd already extended the deadline several times: I think the last handover was supposed to be Aug, but I can't imagine that the original plan was to handover in the middle of the summer rush so that may also have been an extended deadline...

I rather get the impression that the RAF feel they have finally thrown up their hands and walked away.
