Spend what seemed like most of yesterday in the loft, fixing the ***** fibre optic ceiling lights for the new bathroom. It is amazing how, after an hour or so, the relief you get from moving from a narrow rafter to a slightly wider piece of wood exceeds the joy produced by most everyday pleasures. I am still cramped all over from crouching over so as not to bump my head on the tarred paper stuff under the tiles.

Though in fact, I didn't spend the whole day in the loft because I did a good walk along the Lynher, and up to the Cadson Bury iron age hill fort. It is two hills over from Hingston Down (where the valiant Cornish were defeated by the villainous men of Wessex. Or possibly where noble King Egbert of Wessex overcame a dastardly confederation of Cornishmen and Viking mercenaries, depending). I have a (so far as I know wholly unsubstantiated) theory that the valiant (or villainous) Cornish rallied at Cadsonbury before marching East along the Tamar Valley to Hingston Down.

How funny. I also spent much of the weekend in the loft, flooring it (I did about 1/4) so we can move our junk up there out of the dining-room. Yep, you do need knee-pads. I have some, and irritating though they are, they are better than not. I can hugely empathise with the move from the narrow rafter. One of the great pleasures of loft-flooring is, it gradually gets easier and easier as you can start to kneel on the floor you have already put in place.

The walk sounds good. I love hill forts -- imagining the ancient battles, brrr!

Neuromancer.

The middle of our loft is nicely boarded - but the bit I needed to get at for this is under the eaves where you would never want to put stuff because it would be a git to get it out again. Thus the particularly strong levels of woe.

Am now considering whether it's worth making a special trip to Tavistock to buy kneepads to finish the job.

Better way to save your knees is to use someone else's. Don't you have a husband you can send up to the loft for this sort of thing?

Speaking of which, we've had a light in the loft for 3 years but have never once gone up there. Maybe I should floor that, to store some bits and bobs.

After I've done the garden, put up some trellises and fixed the shower, the wallpaper over the door and the border in the dining room, made a belt for LadyofAstolat's new quiver, fixed up a glove to save her bow fingers, done my breeches, tabard, hat and bells, and made a surcoat and a new shield cover.

Maybe not tonight, then :-)

Hahahahahahahahahah

I have one of those, but mine is At War With the Inanimate World so on the whole it is quicker safer and cheaper for me to do it. Though in this case, you need one person stationed below (with drill) and one in loft anyway.

I guessed what your response would be to that before I read it - exactly the same as mine would be if someone suggested that to me :-) Bacchus tries his best with DIY but it's generally accepted in our household that it's better to leave those sort of jobs to me.

So you don't trust Polo to climb a ladder, but you do trust him to drill upwards into the thing you're kneeling on?

That seems... reasonable...

I should shortly have some armoured knees you can borrow :-D

Well, when he's armed with a drill bit only an inch long, and I'm kneeling on rafters that are a good 5-6 inches thick, yes!

Otherwise, I'd have to say, no.

Also, the drill is a manual one. Not powered. Just in case. The power drills we own are all mine.
