Today I found someone who had lost their dog.  Later, I found the  dog, put it on Mollydog's lead (using my dogs as a lure to call it in close, then walking mine offlead), and returned it.

Owner is one of the approximately 9999 people who have told me that they have bought a puppy rather than adopting a rescue dog because they want to 'start from scratch' with training and not to have to deal with any 'issues'.

This makes me want to dance the dance of chaos, singing :"Hahaha!  All living things come with issues!"

Made sure to have my recycled hounds walk nicely to heel when handing back her dog. Fortunately, hounds cooperated!

Incidentally, Az is greatly improved and would very much like to go looning offlead.  I am trying to restrain this, not entirely successfully.

I approve of looning as a verb. :)

If a dog loons too much it pants.

Geddit? Loon pants?

Never mind...

That always makes me despair. Puppies, see, come with this great big giant issue called Being a Puppy. God, give me a nice adult rescue dog any day, I don't mind what I have to work on with it as long as it isn't everything.

*Has not yet recovered from Cole's vile horrible puppyhood and that was eight years ago. SHUDDER.*

I have done several puppy homechecks recently, and I think *all* of them have come out with that line at some point. It's like they think all adult rescue dogs are shivering wrecks or ravening monsters...

I will remember the 'giant issue called Being a Puppy'. Good phrase.

Odd, isn't it? I'm seriously thinking ... rescue kittens. Sometime in the summer after the work on the flat is done and can be at home with them and give them lots of attention. Then can have the fun of having bouncy kittens AND provide a home for ones that need it.

Adopting kittens (or puppies) because you want kittens (or puppies) and are prepared to put in the extra time and effort a baby animal needs, is the right and honest approach.

The people who say they must have a baby because all the thousands of adult animals waiting in rescues are somehow broken or not good enough are very irritating though.

It annoys me as someone that generally adopts adults - what do they mean, my pets are broken! My pets are awesome! And it annoys me as someone who takes the calls from pet owners who bought puppies because all adult rescue pets are broken, and then found that actually, a 15 year commitment was about 5-8 years longer than they could handle.

I suspect it annoys smirnoffmule even more, as he has also had to deal with the people who buy a puppy because all adults are broken, then find that actually, the charm wears off after 6-18 months, pls to take away, thankyou... Am thankful that I don't have to deal with those people!

2 kittens will be a lot of fun! Having had pairs and single cats, I'd definitely go for pairs in future, I think they have more fun (and are definitely more comical to watch).

... I should add in case anyone is wondering, that I didn't turn down any prospective homes for puppies for saying this at the homecheck.

There was one home that wanted 2 puppies that would be good with children: they didn't actually have any children living with them, so I did try to talk them into considering taking at least 1, 1-2 year old dog that had been brought up with kids rather than a pair of teeny pups from the same litter (littermates are generally considered more challenging) . I am not sure they bought it though.
