RIP lawnmower

I feel I should have it repaired really, but as a new one will be £90 with free delivery, and there doesn't seem to be any way to get in at the motor through the cheap plastic shell anyway.I'm going to be ungreen and buy a new one.

If I had a flat garden, I'd choose a larger and more robust machine, but when you have three tiny lawns separated by loads of steps, and a further randomly hilly bit full of grass paths accessible only via yet more steps - a lawnmower that advertises itself as only weighing ten and a half kilos has a seductive appeal.  Ten and a half kilos is only about the weight of  two cats, and not even the biggest ones!

Is a cat a standard unit of measurement? I suppose it could be. I can't at present think of any other standard measurements for weight. Height is Nelson's Column, length is a double decker bus, volume is an Olympic swimming pool and area is Wales (though that would tend to make it rather challenging to measure the area of a lawn) but mass...? May as well be cat, I suppose, though we would have to standardise cats first.

I think of all multi-kilogram weights in animals
4 Kilos = One Small Cat, eg Yama
5 Kilos = One Standard cat, eg Footie
8 Kilos = One Hairy Bear Cat
14 Kilos = One Ronnie dog
22 Kilos = One Az
28 Kilos = One Mollydog
34 Kilos = One Duke

I may possibly soon be fostering a Wolfhound cross : if this happens, I will soon have a measure of weight even larger than One Duke. I don't know how much people weigh in Kilos, only in Stone.

I measure food shopping in grammes, ingredients that I cook with in ounces, people in pounds (though it used to be in stone until a few years ago) and cats in kilograms. It's all very confusing, and leaves me with no clear instinctive idea of how many chocolate cakes you could fit into one Precious or how many Preciouses you make with one Pellinor.

I suspect that is an infinite amount, or would that be chocolate cakes in the other one? I forget which is which.

Hang on- you think 5kg is a standard cat! Yipes! I really do have small Wegies! Mechtilde got to nearly 5kg once, but even so...

Have you considered a hand pushed lawnmower? They are pretty good for small lawns, and you don't have the weight of the motor.

I think it may be that my cats are a bit on the monster side... Now thinking I should weigh Footie and check that weight, I might be misremembering which for a Standard Measure of Weight is appalling quality control. He's not fat though, just kind of chunky. Henning is a bit fat, I admit, but Kjetil is not that much lighter and he's very lean. Kjetil is like what an otter would be if it were a cat, if that makes any sense.

I considered a hand mower, but I fear it wouldn't have the oomph to get through undergrowth in those 'damn I should have done this last week' corners.
