Sodden

It is once again the time of year when Az and I plod dismally in sodden raincoats along a soaking river valley, in the wake of a happy nude greyhound, speculating darkly about whether she is actually an Elf.

The sky is grey.  The light is so blue-grey it makes the lights in the windows of the houses look orange. Even when it is technically daylight, it feels like evening.   There's no wind here in the valley, but I'm told that down by the sea they have closed the Tamar bridge to high-sided vehicles, caravans (yay!) and bicycles.   I assume that cyclists are allowed to walk over with their bikes, and don't have to curl up sadly with them under a hedge, unable to get home... the next bridge up the Tamar is at Gunnislake, about twenty miles as the exhausted cyclist peddles.

This morning there were brilliant blue skies and a rainbow, and the whole land glowed golden in the sunlight. It feels like a long time ago.

Same here. Cheerful bright blue skies to start the day, utter greyness by lunchtime, night by 4pm.

I'm on the side of dismal plodding in raincoats. Pip's on the side of happy nudism.

It was glorious weather here this morning, too - so much so that I looked very incredulous when various people said that They were predicting hideous weather-related doom this evening. But it all sounds very doomy outside now, so that should teach me to scoff.

Am intrigued, though, as to why cavorting in the rain in the nude is a sign of being an elf. Should I be reading the Silmarillion with very different mental pictures?

Being strangely cheery in terrible weather and having mud, snow, and rain mysteriously not stick to you is definitely an Elfy trait.

Nudist Elves not actually described so far as I recall. But I'm not ruling it out.

You just haven't read the right fanfic.

There are nudist hobbits aren't there? (They left that scene out of the film for some reason.)

Presumably the elves were naked when they awoke at Cuivienen.

I don't think it counts as nudism if a barrow-wight stole your clothes.

... I've always wondered what the barrow-wight did with their pants.

Yeah, but isn't there...frollicking or something?

Because obviously when you just experience a completely traumatic experience involving barrow-wights, the natural thing to do next is to skip around naked with your male friends...

It's tipping down here. I keep reminding myself that we really do need it and I'll be complaining it's too dry come the spring.
