IE6 is 10 years old.  TEN!   And it was never very good.  If YOU or any of your family or friends are using IE6, please consider using software that isn't approaching puberty? It's safer!  It's better!  It's all round the Right Thing to Do!

I have someone reporting a site not displaying quite right in IE6. I don't consider this an error.  I consider this to be a form of public service.

Yes - that's the problem. Slow-moving larger enterprises. We (i.e. JOLF not CA) were using IE6 and Windows XP up until about 18months ago, and even now we're using Vista not Windows 7.

It's not just the big organisations. If you look at figures for where traffic is coming from on any reasonably busy site, you can spot people who are using what can only be (from the network ID, machine details, time of day etc etc) home connections with IE6.

Not many of them in the broad spectrum of things - but those people need protecting from themselves!

Now mobile access is such a big thing, organisational use of ancient creaky browsers is, I would say, less of a problem to the wider Net than it used to be in the bad old days of IE4-5, as those networks tend to also have a lot of restrictions on what they can be used for, and the machines are tightly controlled so at least they are less likely to be humming hives of viruses, and people use their mobile connections for leisure browsing. Not that that can't be a PITA also...

For a long time now I've been of the opinion that a site should refuse to display its contents in IE6, but instead display a message saying Use a modern browser, cretin!.

I think if more sites did things like that it would greatly help the overall 'net community, as well as saving people from their own stupidity and ignorance.
