Mollydog is at my vet at the moment, very ill and on a drip. She has been vomiting since Wednesday morning, can't keep any food down, an anti-emetic had no effect overnight, and they couldn't see any problems when they X-rayed her and gave her an ultrasound scan this morning.   I really didn't think when I took her in this morning that she was going to make it, but I'm now feeling a little more hopeful.

This is much much worse than the tummy bug Tommy had last week. She is an old girl to be going through such a severe illness, so I'm very worried.

They have managed to stop her vomiting at least, and are now trying to get her stabilised with a cocktail of drugs.  They told me what the drugs were, but I did not take notes.   Am awaiting another update at 7pm.

I have tried to spell out that any complete food that contains rice is likely to give her the runs, they all do, I have tried loads, it's not just plain rice, it is anything with rice or maize as an ingredient, which practically all complete foods have.   I'm not 100% sure that they have taken this fact in: they tried to tell me that if it was a prescription diet it would be OK. No it won't! I don't care who they buy it from, it's still a complete food containing rice, ergo it is likely to give her the runs and a gassy bum. As she is already full of gas, that seems to me not a good plan. I would not be bankrupting myself with 40 quid for 10Kg food if I could buy something else and it would be fine!

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Pp says pragmatically "if they give her the runs then at least stuff will be going through rather than in and out the front". I suppose he is right.
Update: OK, latest is that her temperature has come down. She's been sick once today, which is a major improvement. Still breathing heavily.

Oh, cripes! Poor Molly.

She hasn't been walking on gritted roads and then licking her paws, has she?

We don't get gritted round here when it's snowy and icy, and it's actually been relatively warm of late.

I don't think so - she's not a big one for paw-licking - actually, with the arthritis and the long legs, I'm not even sure if she *can* lick her front paws any more! And as Pp says, we don't get much gritting round here anyway.

At the moment the vet reckons it's a very severe gastroenteritis. :-(

Such a worry when they have to be kept in, even though you know it's for the best... Fingers and everything else crossed for her to get well soon.

My best friend has a dog who can't eat rice - he gets potato and venison complete dog food, that doesn't have rice or maize in. I can find out the brand if you'd like1

Normally I feed a lamb and potato diet that is similar - I'm just a bit worried because I'm not sure the vet has taken on board *why*.

I would be interested in the name of the venison and potato food though - there aren't that many grainfree foods out there and it's useful to have options!
