- In Star Trek the Next Generation, it is known to  be absolutely essential that everyone should have an understanding of calculus.
- it is also a truism that human beings as a species all love their children and would never ever choose to give a child up, even to a life of peace and plenty.

I conclude that the society of STNG is a lot stronger on maths than it is on history.

In Doctor Who : The Stones of Blood, the Doctor should have dumped useless Romana 1, who puts on silly shoes and falls randomly off cliffs, and recruited instead as his companion the awesomely terrifying Professor Amelia Rumford, Bronze Age archaeologist. I particularly liked her rancorous references to the idiocy of rival archaeologists.

Prof Rumford is great isn't she. She's what makes that story so enjoyable. I aim to be that type of no nonsense old lady :-D

No, just one I haven't used for some time, it seemed appropriate as an icon when the discussion was old sci fi :-)

Context: One of the things I bought with the Amazon vouchers I got as a leaving present from my former colleagues was the Key to Time boxed set, so we're slowly working our way through it. With the death of Mrs Tamm, it seemed like the thing to do. (Oh, and while I agree with the Professor Rumford plaudits, I actually like Romana I, and even you liked her vaguely Stevie Nicks outfit.)

I got the Key to Time boxed set as an anniversary present this year, I was part way through when she died. I liked Mary Tamm too, and her dresses, but she really did wear the wrong footwear in this story. She should have gone back and changed into some boots, I'm sure she could have found some fashionable, yet practical boots in the TARDIS wardrobe.

Personally I have long thought that acquiring a noticably old companion would be great.

For one thing, it would be something new, even though the old series had a lot more variety in companions that the new one is allowing.

Oooh! I can't wait to check that one out. That is if it's been released on DVD yet!! Sounds like a typical prehistorian, and a worthy role model for Yours Truly!

I thought of you when we watched it! Stones of Blood is out on DVD, that's how we watched it, philmophlegm being a long-term Who fan...
