Our big brown boy got weaker overnight, and there was nothing more the vet could do.  We went this morning to say goodbye to him and held him while the vet let him go.  It was very quick. He was very very tired. He still managed to ask for cuddles and pur a little, but he was a shadow of himself. He was such an active energetic cat, who would walk for miles with me and the dogs and more or less feed himself on rats and rabbits in the summer. I feel he stayed with us because he liked us, not because we fed him.

This is how I shall always remember him.

I won't forget the day we met some deer, and I managed to call the dogs back, but not the cat! I don't know what he thought he was going to do if he caught them. He was very like a little dog in some ways, so it's sort of appropriate that he was once in Dogs Today magazine, with Mollydog.

I hope Henning is going to cope all right without him. Kjetil was always the happy confident brother, and Henning was always the troubled grumpy one.

Oh no! Poor Kjetil. He even went voyaging into outer space with us one year, IIRC, on the grounds that he was so cute that no enemy could resist him. I hope Henning copes okay.

Oh he did, of course! Not a very useful member of the party, but a very fearless and cheerful one.

We are both missing him very much. I'm honestly not sure about Henning. I think he was looking for him yesterday, but I'm not sure.

That's very moving. He looks amazing in that photo, and I love the idea of him following you and hunting. Couldn't be more different from my cat.

Thank you. He was definitely at an extreme end of the cat spectrum as a hunter and explorer, but also very cuddly!

I'm so sorry - it's always so hard to let a furry friend go. But it's good that you were able to be there to say goodbye. What a lovely tribute and beautiful pictures, you obviously have such a lot of happy memories. I hope you all adjust very soon to the new order of things.

Oh, I'm sorry. He was really gorgeous - you were most fortunate to have known him, and he was most fortunate to have had you. Having sent four cats and a horse on into the afterlife, it's strange how you just know when they're tired of life and want to shuffle off to the afterworld...

I'm so so sorry. Kjetil was great, such a character and so soft (in all senses!) He was very comforting when I was feeling poorly at your house many years ago, coming and being cute at me and letting me stroke him for ages. I didn't get to see him as often as I'd have liked, but even in that short amount of time I got really fond of him, so I can't imagine how you and Philmophlegm must feel :-( I am so sorry for your loss.

:-( I've been away this week & then out the last 2 nights so missed he was even ill, I'm so sorry to hear this Kjetil was so lovely & such a gorgeous softy to cuddle. It was so cute the way he'd lick you to give you a good wash when he was sitting on your lap & also the way he'd leave his tongue sticking out. I'm sure he'll be greatly missed & I hope Henning doesn't feel too lost without him.

It seemed to happen very quickly at the end, although I think he'd probably been losing weight for a while, suddenly it just fell off and there wasn't really any question that it was the end. Which did make it easier, in some ways, but still hard.
