Firstly, I sat down and made myself go through properly step by step and work out what was causing the repeated Blue Screens of Death on this laptop.    I found it was a hardware problem with one of the memory cards.  So I swapped out and tested memory cards!  And then I bought new memory to replace the one that was duff (although I must say this machine seems to be running quite happily on just the remaining 2Gb at the moment.   (2Gb of RAM! I remember when a 1Gb hard disk was big!)

And we took the living room apart and cleaned it unmercifully to within an inch of its life.
We even painted some of the walls because the paint came off with all the scrubbing.   All the animals fled in terror, apart from Yama who sat on top of the cat tree surveying the chaos around him, like this:
Cleaning
Philmophlegm organised the DVDs in historical date order, which meant several pauses to check the dates of Ghenghis Khan, or the Emperor Commodus.   We haven't quite managed to put things back together yet, so there are still piles of stuff here and there, and no curtains (I am conducting an experiment on the subject of 'do curtains need dry cleaning or can you just bung them in the washing machine, the outcome of which will be established when I hang them back up and they do, or do not, turn out to have shrunk) but at least our house is considerably cleaner, less tangled, and 100% in date order.

When we had collapsed in a heap, Brythen let himself out (by standing up and working the doorhandle with his paw: why do I have lurchers again?)  and he charged madly round the garden.  Then he came storming back in with muddy feet and danced on the clean carpet.  Alas.

Well done! I am trying to get the books in the spare bedroom arranged in some form of order (especially important when books are double-stacked, I feel), which for the history books means in date order, but in practice that's actually incredibly difficult to do. Where, for example, would one file a book on the history of misogeny, or absinthe, or prostitution, or homosexuality, or.....? And it's not even as though I could have a shelf for these outliers - many of my history books deal with themes analysed over long periods of time. I imagine P did not have such problems with the DVDs - or did he?

Even with the fairly small number of DVDs, we had some debateable ones - does The Thirteenth Warrior go in the 10th century, as it has Vikings and is derived from Ibn Fahdlan, or earlier, because it's a retelling of Beowulf?

And then there's 'Tamar, a Shining Continuity' which is a seemingly-endless local history documentary which I watched largely as a tribute to the minor Westcountry deity that is Craig The Weatherman, and spans quite a long period... in the end we put that with Bush Tucker Man, but I'm still not entirely 100% on the reasoning there!

You should thank Brythen. Clean carpets must be baptised, as every dog knows, and better muddy paws than digestive disorders...

He's baptised it several times now! Though you are 100% correct that mud is preferable to digestive Juices.
