I was really delighted to see a big pile of cabbages, with the stall holder flailing around them, trying to hold at bay a group of Cabbage White* butterflies, flutteringly intent on mischief. :-D

* yes, I know that in species terms they are either Large White, or Small White, and 'cabbage white' is incorrect.  In behavioural terms for this particular group, however, I feel that 'cabbage white' was right on the money.

Since your post about the dearth of butterflies has unleashed a veritable horde of the things on the West Country, I trust that your post on the dearth of hedgehogs has done the same, and they are even now increasing exponentially in hidden hedgerows, ready to unleash themselves when the time is right.

Could you bemoan the dearth of dormice, please?

I have noted before that a sure way of making sure things turn up is to bemoan the lack of them on the Internet.

A few years ago I mentioned on Usenet that I'd always loved the rosebay willowherb plant, and how sad it was that this attractive wildflower was not available commercially.

I think it took about three weeks for a patch of RBWH to sprout after that, and I now have a huge purple mass of it up in the top garden. Apparently Rosebay Willowherb is like vampires, and has to be invited in...

I have been told that the hedge on the right side of the house is exactly right for dormouse territory, and therefore it is strange that I have yet to see any dormice in it... ;-)

I still refer to white butterflies as 'cabbage white's (even though our local ones hang out around the nettle patches with the White Admirals), and to Fairy Penguins as such (I gather the new term is 'little penguins' - how mad can PC get?)

Poor stallholder-of-cabbage, but I must admit the mental image wrought by that description is hilarious
