The Escapes of Mirkwood

Swishing through a carpet of red-brown beech and sweet chestnut leaves carpeting the lane, I was surprised by a black squirrel. It leapt down into the lane, and then seeing me and Brythen looming at it, zoomed away again even faster. Brythen took off after it, straight over a seven-foot stone wall. I don't *think* he has stern views about the escapes of Mirkwood invading the Tamar Valley: he just thinks squirrels are AMAZING.

I bet it's in league with the Things in the mines and the probably-orcs that run the quarry.

Aren't black squirrels exciting? I remember seeing them in Vancouver, amongst the trees in Stanley Park, and thinking, "Mirkwood!" (And there were signs saying 'don't feed them, they're dangerous').

They are weird. Squirrels are a bit mad anyway, but allowing them to become ninjas is a Step Too Far in my book.
