I like it and its multiple varients a lot. It may be a little less clever and polished than some things, but that fits it perfectly to its niche.

(I suspect Old Tolkien would have been horrified, but I reason that if you start trying to avoid things that would have horrified JRRT in his later years, you will never stop. I'm hopeful that Young JRRT might have been more relaxed about it.)
