Today I ate my first apple of the year from the garden.  It wasn't quite quite ripe, but it was still quite sweet and flavourful.  And it's only the 3rd of August!  I had my first squash as well (Spaghetti Square Pyjamas!), and the peppers have started to turn a lovely orange.   Only the ones that are in pots on the shelving in the greenhouse have really done well: the ones in the ground don't look anything like so good.

The fig tree needs a prune, but is covered in figs, and the grape vine is doing really well.  I shall have to work out what to do with all those grapes: winemaking seems like just too much hassle on such a small scale, but...

The raspberries didn't do quite so well, alas (not helped by Mollydog's nefarious activities) but I did get a few bowlsful.  It's all a bit overgrown up there: I'd say I needed to take the strimmer to it, only the pumpkins and squashes have grown through it all now, so it will have to wait!

I'm off to the Wag & Bone show tomorrow.  I'm not taking the dogs: Az was far too weirded out by that little show in Exeter: there's no way he'd cope with a big event like this.

Feeling a bit tense about work at the moment, but I am planning to forget that totally from 2pm tomorrow and worry about something else for a change!

Every time I read "The fig tree needs a prune" I find myself with a mental image of you offering the tree a handful of dried plums.

We've had a few strawberries and one raspberry this year but it will be a while before we get any more soft fruit.

Have a nice time at the show.

I've just realised that I seem to post about pruning my fig quite often. Possibly I should prune it more and post about it less!

Ate the first ripe fig yesterday. It was yum.

None of our apples are anywhere near ripe yet, but we've certainly got the best crop ever this year. They obviously prefer the Kent climate to that of Cumbria. As to our other fruit we've had 2 loganberries and 1 morello cherry so far. Unfortunately Bacchus didn't realise our cherry tree was a sour one before he started to eat the cherry ;-p

There's about 5 more cherries still ripening and I'm trying to decide whether to make the world's smallest cherry pie or Black forest Gateau. We also have 1 1/2 bunches of Dornfelder grapes ripening nicely. Possibly not enough to make Chateau Gillingham this year, but maybe if we combined ours with yours we could make Chateau Buttingham? I could offer the services of a wannabe wine-maker too!

My cherries vanished. One day they were just starting to show a slight duskiness: the next day they were gone!

Would certainly be interesting to see how wine from our grapes would turn out.
