I have uploaded some old banquet photos here for those who may remember them.

The username and password are both taruithorn.

Obviously this isn't particularly to make them private, it's just I'd rather they didn't get picked up by search engines and displayed in random image searches.

Thanks for posting those. I recognise some of the faces - and, to echo the comments of others, "Doesn't everyone look young?" - but can someone put names to the others?

Rather embarrassingly, no, not all of them!

I am fairly sure that they span at least 3 banquets* and a punt party.

*I'm pretty sure that the blacked up Nazgul are from 1991 but that most of the rest are from 1992-3. Somewhere or other, I have a suspicion there are more photos of earlier events, but who knows where they have got to.

That would explain why I don't recognise more of them - my first banquet was in '94 (although I had met a few Taruithornites at the '93 Oxonmoot - [livejournal.com profile] kargicq and [livejournal.com profile] skordh for two, and possibly their partners for two more.

I think I met you at the '93 Oxonmoot too, but things are a bit blurry due to the amount of alcohol I drank!

You might be right. I'll dig out my '93 Oxonmoot photos sometime (and my '94 banquet photos). I might even scan a few!

We were certainly at Priscilla's together, as witnessed by my photo of you.

I just had a very quick look through my albums (in the 20 minutes I'm home for lunch) and fortunately I labelled the back of my photos. The blacked-up Nazguls are March 1992, from the Barad-dur banquet at New College. The Shire banquet was in March 1993, in Magdalen, which also accounts for quite a lot of your pictures.

We have far more pictures of Arthurian banquets than Taruithorn ones - including our fair share of embarrassing Bunn photos, I should add. I won't bother putting the albums away, in case anyone wants a nostalgia trip next weekend.

Clearly George Lucas was hanging around and nicked this look for Darth Maul

I had a look at my old Miruvors last night, and I think I was getting confused because there was also a Barad Dur banquet in 1990. I can't remember if I went to that, or anything about it, nor can I remember anything about the pesky 1991 banquet, even though I am *sure* I must have gone to it, and I think I can even vaguely remember one of the planning committee meetings. Unless that was for one of the others, of course...

I think my brain is going.

I have a few pics of the 1990 banquet. I can't see you in any of them, but I don't have enough pictures to be sure. I expect you'd remember it if you'd gone to it, since it was the memorable one where IP (remember him?) got taken to hospital (in full Nazgul regalia), after an encounter with JO's sword outside in the quad of New College.

I'm fairly sure the 1990 banquet was in late November, like the Arthurian one. The 1992 one was in March. Is it possible that there wasn't actually a 1991 banquet at all, since a decision was taken to move it to Hilary rather than Michaelmas?

Philmophlegm has just asserted loudly that the blacked up Nazgul are definitely 1990, not 1992. Could it be that the 1992 Nazgul are different ones?

I really can't remember if I actually went to the 1990 banquet, or was just told about it at length. I definitely went to the 1992 one though, as my old friend K booked the room, and attended (rather out of place) as an Ent.

Philmophlegm is convinced that there was some sort of Taruithorn event at the hall in Polstead road before 1997 as well, and as I'm fairly sure he didn't attend any of the Arthurian events there, I think he might be right...

Heavens, what a graphic demonstration of the unreliability of primary sources this is.

Ah! good to see the 1992 pictures (I'd been told about this banquet about 50 times by various people* trying to explain Taruithorn banquets to me during my first year, and the pictures are even funnier than I'd imagined).

I do remember the names of almost everyone in the 1993 pictures, if that helps. And I also remember exactly where I bought all the components of my costume, except for the waistcoat which was kindly loaned to me by Na-Lon.

*although you wouldn't think some of them remembered that much of it themselves, looking at the state of them in those photos!

I can put a name to most of the people - apart from some of the people in the ones from March '92. Which ones don't you recognise and I'll see if I know them.

I'll probably reply by email, to protect those that don't want their real names bandies around the internet :-) though it probably won't be till tonight - I should be doing end of year accruals, not looking at LJ at the moment :-)

Yes, it is me on the right of 15, dressed as a drownded hobbit ;-)

1) Pellinor is one of the duellers, and Jez is the troubadour with the guitar. The top guy's name escapes me, but I am fairly sure this is just after he bet his hair on the outcome of some sporting event or other, lost, and philmophlegm gave him a barbering.

2) I obviously knew at the time, but...

3) I think that's kargicq under there somewhere

4) & 5) Nope, no idea. Looks vaguely familiar, but...

7) that's the violinist, but I forget his name

8) Emily, who I think has vanished, and isn't that a very young Richie from a weird angle???

9) The Nazgul are philmophlegm & the ProudTwinly Parent (can't remember other pseudonyms!)

11) Hmmm. Yes. Controversial, that beard.

13) everyone in that pic is people you definitely know, just with weird hair including me (hiding behind Chainmailmaiden)

14) upper one is nameforgotten hairremoved as in 1), lower one is lanciatore. A very *sloshed* lanciatore, admittedly.

15) Yes that is Chainmailmaiden looking glamourous yet also slightly undead. The gentleman showing off his legs is chris_maslen. He later swore many times that he hadn't realised the tights weren't opaque...

16) It's AMAZING how successful a silly hat and weird hair can be as a disguise...

17) Look HARD at the archer. And at Robin Hood. And think how many men you know own white tights and would wear them in public. Also, that thing behind the archer isn't a cloak. It's someone from your f-list...

The other duellist was called Bernard. The duel was over the pronunciation of "Cheviots", of all things. One of us pronounced it "Tchee-viotz", the other "Sheh-veeoh".

I leave the question of which is correct as an exercise for the reader.

Me *sloshed*?? Shurely not? :-) Could have been worse - I dozed off in one of the bay windows later on and was only woken up when the hoovering began!

That is my first banquet - Shire in 1993. In order to effect a more Hobbit-esque physique I had shoved a college scarf down the front of my waistcoat, which turned out to be very handy later in the evening as I could take it out and use it as a pillow.

1. Surname is a bit like the arty town in Cornwall. He bet his hair that England would beat Wales in Rugby Union. They didn't. I cut it off. Heh heh. Incidentally, Bernard wanted to be Aragorn in the dramatic reading, but lost the addition to kargicq, and we never saw him again!

2. Lucy.

3. If you say so.

5. Wasn't she a friend of na_lon's?

7. Gavin?

8. Yes on both counts.

9. I think the official pseudonym (or at least the one used by Neuromancer is 'Gimli').

15. Phwooar! (chainmailmaiden doesn't look bad either to be fair...)

16 and 17 are really easy.

15 left is [livejournal.com profile] chris_maslen in his Grima guise, although he looks more like Pieter De Vries from the 80s "Dune" flick to me.
