bunnFor some reason I haven't posted here in ages, but I don't really want to drop out of the habit, so here's an attempt to catch up.
Itching things
Theo's ears are better. I'm wiping them out with Leucillin, which is an anti-fungal, and I hope this will help control the overgrowth of yeast.
Fankil the cat has developed an itching problem. He scratched himself raw, had to go to the vet for steroids, recovered, then once the steroids wore off he began itching again. He probably has some kind of environmental allergy,but it's difficult to work out what it could be, and the vet says that even if we found out, there's a strong chance it would be something we can't eliminate. We don't use scented candles or cleaning products or anything like that.
I had a couple of horsefly bites that developed into a nasty attack of infected eczema. I took it to the pharmacy where it was treated under the NHS Common Ailments scheme, which is very nifty and much quicker than trying to get a GP appointment. Swimming in the sea seemed to make the problem worse, so I had to drop out of swimming for a while.
THEN that was just on the point of having nearlyhealed up, when a dratted wasp stung me on the lower leg. Just randomly, through leggings! I looked dubiously at the sting, but it hurt for a day then vanished, which was fine for a week or so. But NOW the damn thing has flared up with another burst of eczema which I have a nasty feeling is infected and will need more antibiotics. It feels rather swollen and red, drat it.
I am now feeding Theo the new insect-based dog food pellets, which he seems to like a lot, as much as almost anything apart from cheese. Cheese is his absolute favorite thing.
Nenya cat remains competent and untroubled by Woes.
Not even going to try to post about World Events. Times too interesting.
I read a copy of Neil Gaiman's M is for Magic which had been hanging around, to try to decide if I wanted to keep any of my Neil Gaiman books, now that it turns out he's a creepy sexual predator. Haven't decided, but did conclude the end of M is for Magic seemed oddly cold and depressing, so I will probably get rid at least of that one.
The number of orders arriving at the Shop on the Borderlands is up considerably on last year, but the value of orders is not: we are mooching along sending out about 20% more stuff, but with about the same money coming in as last year. Unsure if this is down to what we've got in stock, macroeconomic trends, or just... randomness. We have reduced the enormous backlog of RPGs in the house but not in the Shop, however, which has to be a good thing. We might even have slain the backlog by the New Year at this rate.
We took the canoe out a couple of days ago, just a gentle paddle for half an hour. I wanted to check that she was still in good condition, thinking of probably selling her in the Spring. She's not really best adapted for the amount of wind we get here, and we haven't used her much since we got the kayaks and the boat. I will miss her but hopefully we can find a more up-river home for her where she will get further moderately-sedate adventures.

Date: 2024-11-16 04:58 pm (UTC)Sorry to hear about your eczema flare up, not fun at all, I hope you get that resolve soon. I'm currently itching too, our cats managed to get fleas somehow and while they unlike our previous cats don't have a flea allergy. It appears I do. We realised we can't use spot-on on them because of their communal grooming, so we've had to go back to tablets. Fortunately flea tablets seem to have improved and these are yeast and vanilla flavoured. The boys scoffed theirs and looked for more. Freyja was a bit more dubious until it got a cheese outer layer. We've sprayed everything thoroughly, but until we catch them all, I'm left itching. For some reason I am far more delicious than Bacchus, who has 1 bite to my many :(

Date: 2024-11-17 10:22 pm (UTC)I think Fankil does have a flea allergy, but it must be something else as well with him because nobody has any sign of fleas at all, and we've been very regular with the treatments.
The vet just gave him antibiotics and steroids and Mark says didn't seem keen to investigate further, but perhaps I should look into a skin supplement for him, at least.

Date: 2024-11-18 03:27 pm (UTC)I think the cats got their fleas from the vet, our other two frequently came home with a flea from there, though that fact had slipped my mind until this happened. We'd not got round to sorting regular treatment for our new kitties as we foolishly thought they were ok, since they aren't going out yet, but no such luck. Definitely wishing I could have spot on treatment or flea tablets too. Then at least when the little gits bite me I'd have the satisfaction of knowing they'd die as a result.

I'm so disappointed in him - even his version of events is creepy and horrible, regardless of whether the encounters were consensual. So far I have decided to keep Stardust, The Sleeper and the Spindle, and Good Omens (because those are collaborations), and also things like Lud-in-the-Mist and a collection of Diana Wynne Jones essays where he has happened to be a co-editor or contribute a foreword or something. I always had mixed feelings about American Gods and Anansi Boys. Haven't yet decided what to do about Neverwhere (might just keep the DVD and radio play) but my biggest upset is with his non-fiction collection, The View From the Cheap Seats, which I used to dip into as a comfort read. It doesn't feel very comforting anymore.

Date: 2024-11-17 10:03 pm (UTC)I'm definitely keeping Good Omens, and our copies of the Sandman comics are Pps rather than mine so I don't have to make the decision about those. The rest, I think, can probably go to make space for other books, along with the Harry Potters, which I don't think I'll read again.
I definitely have books by authors with various difficult or awful backgrounds to them, but on the whole, those are not books that I'm keeping to read as comfortable easy re-reads. Maybe it's better to not know much about authors! I've just been re-reading some of my Gillian Bradshaws, and really, I know zero about her and don't feel I need to.
