Dog doing well

Az had his bandages changed yesterday, and the leg is doing amazingly well. The huge flap of skin that was hanging off has all connected back with the main leg, and there are no more tendons or anything on display. I am now feeling much more optimistic that it will heal OK.

The vet wanted to leave the bandages off and have him wear a buster collar to stop him licking. Well, it might stop Az licking, but it's not going to stop Mollydog, who often licks Az's legs. What with that and the whole 'barking at the collar' thing, that was just not going to work.

I asked the vet to rebandage it instead, and, I suspect, made another entry into the 'awkward customer' book at the vet by refusing to let them take him away to be done, but instead making them bring the bandages into the consulting room and do it there.

I still think I was right to insist on this: he was shaking and clearly terrified I was going to go away and leave him there again. He was much more stressed about going there than he has been on previous occasions, and I really felt that if I let them take him away, even briefly, it would reinforce the fear. He's a dog that's nervous of strangers at the best of times, and is much more confident if his people are there with him.

So, if we stayed together, that made it more positive. Anyway, I can't see why they needed to do it in a different room: it was only sticking on a new dressing and some vetrap, it's not like any special equipment was needed. Someone would have needed to hold his head anyway, and frankly he'd be much less trouble if that was someone he knew.

He has been very good about eating his antibiotics. Good thing too, the tablets are ginormous.

Glad to hear he's doing so well, I'm suprised the vets were so fussy though you'd have thought that the owner holding the dog would make sense to them all round. I suppose they wanted it open to heal off but you had good reasons (Molly) for not wanting that.

I have found I'm much happier about vet treatment of my pets now I've got the confidence to argue with them if I reckon they've got it wrong!

Strangely, it's easier with vets than it is with doctors. I think it's the feeling of power that comes from the fact that you are paying for their work directly and there are no barriers to 'shopping around'.

Glad he's doing well! I clicked only very tentatively on the pic, in case it was of icky things, so was relieved to see only the very cute doggy stockings. However, it does look as if the vet has wired him up to the speakers... perhaps for intravenous injections of Guitar Hero?

Sadly, I am still rather pathetic. I can do "easy" fine, but when as soon as I tried "medium", I discovered that the little finger of my left hand is a mindless little sheep, which refuses to act independently of its neighbours. It obeys me when I play the piano, but just does on strike when a plastic guitar is involved.

I don't suppose there's any hope that people will play it so much and get so good at it that they won't see any point in playing it next time we meet up? There will be no point in those of us without consoles even bothering *sigh*

re. games, and not about dogs at all:

I always prefer to play games that no-one's ever played before, at gatherings. It's fun having the sense of discovery together, and to start off all being pathetic and amused together. Each gathering seems to have a different "game of the weekend", though. I don't think one console game has ever dominated for two gatherings in a row. We've had the Weekend of the Bongos, the Weekend of Wii Sports, the Weekend of Wario Ware, the Weekend of the Eye Toy etc.

(Not that I intend to practice Guitar Hero. It doesn't interest me enough to play it solo, except for an hour or two of experimenting this weekend. It was bought purely as a fun two-player game for drunken Friday nights.)
