In a related vein, I read a short SF story by Joan D Vinge this morning. It was set in 2001. In a large, comfortable and well-furnished scientific study camp on Mars. It was only published in 1985.

Largely mobile. In fact, all too mobile, and has to be prevented from dashing off into the gorse and ripping off his dressing. Apart from that, he seems fine to my uneducated eye.

He is extremely cheerful, and has been allowed off-lead again, much to his delight (expressed through dancing on the toes of his long legs)
