The Gardener's World Christmas special is on cobnuts. Yay, I love cobnuts and they are so hard to find in the shops. I think they are a bit rash recommending people grow them in gardens though. Hazels take up a hell of a lot of space. I mean, yes the nuts are fabulous, and they are handy for coppice poles, but...

Also, Monty Don built a pergola from untreated hazel poles. That's all very well, but he didn't point out it would probably only last about 5 years before rotting...

It was only a brief comment - "This will need to be replaced after five years, but I see it as a labour of love, and in that time you'll get lots of beans" - or something like that.

We planted a Kentish cobnut in our garden (I say we, but I obviously did all the work), I'm hoping to get some nuts off it and then move before it gets too big :-D
