A Question for Dog Owners
Jun. 16th, 2012 08:40 amI've put this on Facebook as well where most of my loony dog nut friends tend to hang out, but I thought I'd pop it on here as well. Facebook is so random in what it shows and what disappears...

Improbable innocence
May. 23rd, 2012 08:36 amMost mornings, I am drinking coffee when I am alarmed by the sound of loud gallopings, leapings, and thumpings coming from upstairs. "What's going on?" I cry and rush to the foot of the stairs, to be greeted by Brythen lurcher and Suma Bungle sitting side by side at the top of the stairs looking down at me, a wide-eyed picture of innocence. They make a good pair, as they are roughly the same colour, though one is tall and thin and stripy, and one is small and round and stripy. They have the same expression in their eyes, though Suma Bungle's eyes are blue, and Brythen's are amber-brown.
One of these days I will remember to take my camera with me when this happens.
Then I have to decide whether to go up and find out if they have thrown anything important on the floor.

Naughty dog!
May. 8th, 2012 12:12 pmThis morning I wormed and flea treated my dogs with Advocate drop on wormer. It's just a smelly clear liquid. Az just sat there. Brythen, on the other hand felt that I was assaulting him horribly and leapt vertically in the air, hitting me hard on the chin and causing me to bite both sides of my tongue. It really hurts!
He has also decided that he lives here now, so having been here for two months and being generally a very *very* good dog, he is pushing the boundaries a bit, and his lovely almost perfect recall has gone right out the window. He's jumped through three hedges now and not come back for several minutes - *thankfully* not into fields with lambs. But obviously I can't take that risk so will have to be much more careful. I'm hoping that lots of recall practice (with sossidges) will put things back where they were!

I think I can say that he is staying.

Never say a dog is an easy dog...
Mar. 13th, 2012 08:52 amI think they read it and resolve to cause trouble. This morning Brythen managed to pull down one of the walls on his crate, got out, shut Az in the study and Tommy in the shower room and then left a sizable steaming deposit on the landing...
Then he stole a bottle of carpet shampoo. Fortunately I managed to rescue it before he made a hole in it. And this evening, he stole a rather fancy paper bag with ribbon handles that I had saved from Christmas, and tore it delightedly to shreds!
Dogs! Why do I have them! :-D

State of the hounds
Mar. 7th, 2012 11:35 pmWell, on the whole things are going fairly well. There have been a few blips - the house training definitely still needs work. I am crating Brythen at night, and *trying* to keep him supervised. He has just enough idea at the moment to want to sneak round the corner to do a pee, which is rather the worst of all possible worlds. But I think this is workable.
And my nice Logitech mouse has been accidentally eaten, meaning I am currently using an old Microsoft mouse that is DRIVING ME MAD. But apart from that, a good time seems to be being had by all. I'm feeling quite optimistic that Az is feeling happier too, which is a great relief. Tommy Shortlegs has a home offer - in London, rather a long way, but they are the best offer we've had for him, they seem really keen and will come to collect him - and I think he will be happy there.

I haven't felt much like any creative endeavour for the last month. First I was so afraid I would lose Mollydog, and then I did lose her and didn't have much energy for other things. I have done some painting, since I had committed to it, but I fear it's come out a bit weary, stale flat and unprofitable... And we have cancelled the planned weekend away for my birthday. But I am feeling a bit brighter with the new dog and the spring. Maybe I shall write some more things this month?

Do I have a new dog?
Mar. 3rd, 2012 05:32 pmI have a new dog. Or, I think I have. Foster-dog Tommy thought Brythen (new name) is awesome, and that the exercise pen at the kennels where there were rope toys were the BEST THING EVER. I really hope he has not overdone it on his bad leg but I did want them to meet offlead before I shoved them all in the car together. I wasn't expecting Tommy and Brythen to start playing, given the size difference, and the fact that Tommy has not previously shown any interest in playing with other dogs!
Az, on the other hand, was terrified by
1) the drive (big road)
2) Tommy squeaking because we made him sit in the boot
3) the kennels (things that go clang)
4) the fences around the exercise pen, which rattled and were Too Tall.
5) the presence of Strange People (two GRWE people and a kennels person, which in Az terms is a crowd).
