The other day I saw a meme of the Millennials, saying that, as a people, they feared DIY because they were the ones who had survived their parents and grandparents terrifying DIY efforts.

At the time I dismissed this as over-caution, but the discovery last night of the DIY fitted pump under the bath here that would not turn off, leading to alarming smoke, and could not be got at, except by moving far too many large reluctant flat-headed screws and wooden slats, and the further discovery that it was plugged into a three-pin electrical socket located directly under the bath has made me think again.

Maybe these millennials have a point after all.

Still, we got all the screws out, unplugged the pump and the smoke went away after a while!  Not entirely sure I want to take another bath directly over an electrical supply though.

- Our washing machine has died. Debating whether to buy a new one (probably more efficient, will take more stuff in one load!) or see if I can find a repairer (more economical and more green to repair than replace - IF I can find a repairer that will come out here for not-astronomic sums and who can actually fix a machine that's about 8 years old and was cheap to start with...)

- Not only does it keep hailing, but I see from my window that Dartmoor is covered in snow! It's nearly April, this is most unexpected.

- forecast for the weekend is dire, so for a change I don't have Gardeners Guilt for going away rather than trimming and pruning madly. Fingers crossed the advent of Aaargh Day will be late this year.

- I went to Milton Keynes with my mother, two collie crosses, and a working Saab. I came back with my mother, two collie crosses, a whippet, an attack of the lurgi, and a Saab with a knackered thermostat.

- The thermostat is fixed and only cost £50 inc parts & labour. And because I'd topped the oil up, I didn't get charged for it by the garage (which tends to do stuff like that and ask later). Am rather cross with Helga Saab for going wrong when I'd bought her new tyres and everything...

- I wrote to my MP about the Digital Economy Bill, which seems to be being shuffled through in a bit of a rush, containing many worrying ideas. There is an Early Day Motion to delay and debate it properly, which I have asked him to support.

Our cooker hood stopped working.
-I checked for possible solutions in the manual
- I looked on the web
- I disassembled the hood and took all the screws out to check for blown fuses and checked the wiring with my electrical screwdriver
- I couldn't work out why there was no electricity going to the thing at all.
- I thought maybe my screwdriver electrical detector thing was broken so I experimented, and managed to explode it.  Now I need a new screwdriver.

Finally, I took everything out of the cupboards.  And found the sodding switch right at the back of one of them, that had got turned off through inappropriate positioning of the tomato ketchup.

grrrrr.
