Saffy goes home
Apr. 27th, 2009 08:11 pm Saffy's new owners met up with me this evening to take her for a walk and then take her home. I was feeling rather stressed about this today - they came to walk her on Weds, and she bolted and ran back to my house. Plus she's a very cuddly dog, always wanting a hug or coming to sit on your feet, so all together, I felt like a git making her move on when she was making it so clear that she was feeling happy and settled!
I felt a bit happier about it after walking with them though - they were talking about the walks they were going to do with her, and about how they'd invited their family to bring their dogs over to visit on Sunday so she could have some offlead time, and they'd bought her a new collar disk and lead. By the end of the walk she was responding to them calling her to come to a certain extent. After all, she's not been with me all that long so I'm pretty sure she will quickly bond with them. I've given them pages of info and what was left of the bag of food so she's got something familiar to eat to start off with.
Strangely, Mollydog seemed most confused - she wanted to get in the car with Saffy and got a bit upset when I told her to get in with Az. They were both a bit wingey* this evening, but after a big mass cuddling session (during which Az washed my ears very thoroughly: he likes ears) they both seem to have settled down now.
*there seems to be no correct-looking way to spell this, but maybe it isn't really a word?

Various assorted burblings.
Apr. 19th, 2009 08:00 amSaffy collie has a new home lined up. She's here for one more week, then she's moving down the river to a new home in the middle of the woods. Having her here has been a lot of fun, (Sooo much walking! soooooo much!) but has confirmed my view that three dogs is Just Too Many, at least with 6 cats as well, and particularly when one of them is a needy walk-obsessed collie! Though to be fair, as collies go, Saffy is fairly laid back and relaxed in the house.
Very pleased with how well Mollydog has coped with extra-long collie walks. That previcox she is on for her bad leg is good stuff! Pix of yesterday's (two hour) walk are here: http://pix.clareassoc.co.uk/pix/thumbnails.php?album=22
Still no news of my car: I've rung a few times and get the impression they haven't even looked at the damn thing yet. I think this may be a consequence of all the major insurance companies only having about 3 'registered garages' in the region, plus an unexpectedly busy Easter weekend. Irritating: if they'd let me go to my local specialist garage I'd probably have it back by now. I'd definitely at least know what it was going to cost!
I'm regretting not using better compost for my pepper and aubergine seedlings. Even with plenty of liquid seaweed feed, they are growing far too slowly.
Bought some more solar lights for the garden. I find the most reliable sort seem to be the ones that are designed to float on ponds, so are completely sealed: otherwise the water gets in after a while and they stop working. They have a loop on the top so you can stick a bit of garden wire through and hang them on trees.
We have started the cats on 'senior' cat food. Of course, the Bungles are not 'senior' (though I was surprised to discover that the vet considered the Hairy Bears at 8-9 to fall into that category) but Perl and Footie are (I can't remember their exact ages without looking them up. This makes me feel guilty!). Anyway, we have one bag of each, and are supplying one bowl of each. I was expecting them to eat the normal stuff and ignore the 'senior', which has fewer calories, but in fact the reverse has been the case: the 'senior' has been scrobbled up with great enthusiasm. Cats are odd.

Garden and dogs
Apr. 5th, 2009 09:09 pmMy radishes are pretty much ready to eat! That was quick. Planted some red cabbage, some more radishes, some lettuce and some basil, all in the greenhouse. I removed nettles from the new raspberry rows, and a lot of grass around the hardy geraniums. My compost heap isn't rotting down as fast as I would like: I think it's too dry. If it were nearer the house I'd water it, but as it is, I'm hoping for rain. This dry spring is fabulous but we really could do with a decent soak now, everything is so dry though it's only just April.
Saffy is getting on much better with the cats today, possibly aided by two lengthy walks. She is now asleep on my foot, but has been off the lead around the house for most of the day with no problems. We have someone interested in adopting her already, but the family is in Portsmouth, which may be a bit too far.

Saffy is an Oldies Club dog who was in a foster home in Plymouth, but it turns out that she's not at all good at being left and gets really stressed and barks when left. As her fosterer worked part time and has near neighbours, it had all got a bit difficult, so she's come to stay with us for a bit as I work from home and am sort of used to dogs that aren't good at being left. She is a fairly weeny collie x with a strange little bob-tail.
