I have just been informed that Mollydog's sire, Mustang Jack, is still alive and is *still acting as a stud*. He is 15 years old and has fathered 4673 registered pups... so far. (That's registered pups: only 'promising' pups would be registered, any born with 'problems' would probably be euthanased.) The last registered litter he sired was born Aug 2006.

Good grief.

4673 pups? What a lot of birthdays he has to remember - not to mention the child support. Also, out of a lot of very silly names in her ancestry, Molly seems to have ended up with the silliest of the lot. (Original name, I mean: imagine standing up on Dartmoor, shouting "I feel great! I feel great!".) But I suppose when you're dealing with nearly 5000 pups from a single dog, you quickly use up "Rover" and "Fido" and have to get creative and silly.

"I feel great" is indeed among the world's most ridiculous dog names. Though his newest son is called 'Haventanotion' which does indeed suggest a running out of inspiration...

4673 pups ... well you can tell who doesn't have to feed and change them at 3am and 5am before getting up for work at 7!!

There speaks a man who, it appears, is rather pleased he did not end up with twins or more... ;-)

Dog names get long and longer.

When my grandad started with flatcoats, they were called things like "Woodpoppy". (Kennel name, "Poppy". Prefix, "Wood").

Then they needed to have two words in the name, and he started using Woodland. So, "Woodland Whipcord." Kennel name, "Whip".

But nowadays, you get things like "Caitland Isle Take a Chance."

Although having said that, I've just checked. Every Crufts winner back to at least 1928 has had at least two names, and there was a four-name winner as early as 1938. Maybe this was where my grandad went wrong; he didn't give his dogs enough names.

O_o

That's a lot of pups, no wonder the dog rescues are overflowing!

Indeed - I knew there were a lot of them, but the idea of him still busily making more in extreme old age is just weird! You wouldn't think he'd be able to manage it, most greyhounds that age have problems just standing up for long!

I suppose it is always possible he has help...

And now I must go and bleach my brain thanks to that thought :-p

Don't they do that with bulldogs or am I imagining that? Or maybe it was the swamp dragons in Terry Pratchett.

Yes, I think they do.
