Apparently drinking beer helps against osteoporosis, prevents heart attacks, reduces risk of diabetes...

(I only read the health stories I want to hear...)

I was glad to see that the NHS 'alcohol advice' leaflets (in our part of the world anyway) don't shy away from this and similar research on wine, and actually state that a drink or two per day can have health benefits.

By the way, quick question (I was surprised by the answer) - what's the age at which you are legally allowed to drink (not buy) alcohol in England & Wales?

5 in a private house, 4 in a pub with a meal?

5 I think, but in private. I seem to remember that you have to be 16 to drink it with a meal in a restaurant.

It's not something I've paid particularly close attention to over the last few years so the rules may have changed.

You can find various amusing points here http://www.thesuperficial.com/archives/2006/02/28/emma_watson_enjoys_her_underag.html
but the consensus on booze in the UK seems to be 5 in private and 14 with a meal if an _>18 yo buys.

Helflaed wins! It's 5 in private, 16 for beer, wine, or cider at a sit-down meal in licensed premises, and if you're under 18 the police can confiscate booze if you're drinking irresponsibly in public (even with your parents). I was surprised by the '5' thing, I thought it would have been older. Cheers!

But (following a discussion at foradan's wedding, with Balrog2) can you be charged with child abuse if you give a minor too much alcohol?
