but the consensus on booze in the UK seems to be 5 in private and 14 with a meal if an _>18 yo buys.

It's 5 in private, 16 for beer, wine, or cider at a sit-down meal in licensed premises, and if you're under 18 the police can confiscate booze if you're drinking irresponsibly in public (even with your parents). I was surprised by the '5' thing, I thought it would have been older. Cheers!
