We'd rather give ourselves electric shocks than be alone with our thoughts, says new study

I was interested by that news story, and thought about it as I mowed the lawn. It seemed odd to me that they ruled out the person who had found a pen and started making a 'to do' list. Surely, that is a person who is not only comfortable alone with their thoughts, but has decided that their thoughts were so useful, they were worried about forgetting them and wanted to record them for their future convenience?

One thing I sometimes like to do in my head is design elaborate rabbit houses. It seems an odd and arbitrary division to say that you are alone with your thoughts while you work out how the doors would be secured and what materials to use for the roof and how to cut a pleasing set of curved windows that could be shuttered in the winter, but to say that as soon as you start to draw the thing on paper, you are somehow operating outside your head. I often write things in my head, but my head has very poor storage facilities so I forget them. Otherwise this blog would have a lot more stuff in it.

I wonder what people who would rather shock themselves with electricity than be alone with their thoughts, think about while mowing the lawn or hoovering? I can't believe anyone thinks about the mowing.

WWII pigeon message stumps GCHQ decoders

I don't know whether to hope that they do manage to decipher it and it reveals some dramatic tale of woe and loss - or whether to hope that they never manage to, thus retaining the air of mystery...

I am resisting the impulse to Kindle George RR Martin's Dance with Dragons at present, but if people continue this frenzied level of excitement over it then I may be forced to do so.

I note that Amazon UK seems to be taking its time sending out the print copies, and wonder if this is a marketing initiative for Kindle...

If I do Kindle it, then it will be the third book that I've found that I actually want to read that is available on Kindle, since I was given the thing several months ago.  I am still hoping that I will warm to it more, but at the moment, an awful lot of the things that cause me to go BOOK!!!! WANT WANT WANT! like a sort of pathetic book-Gollum, simply aren't available in that medium.

Also, I find I kind of like being able to flip through actual pages. But perhaps my Kindle flipping skills will improve with use.

Az is being very needy and demanding this evening (usually, this is Mollydog's role).  I'm not sure if he's missing Kya, or taking advantage of her absence.

In other news I set up a Google+ account to give it a go - but am fully expecting it to go the way of Buzz, Wave, the automatic moustache protecting device, and the serinette* and pass over and be forgotten.

Apparently a letter telling me I need a sight test (not just a contact lens check) has gone AWOL. I discovered this when I went to the contact lens check, about which I did receive a letter, and was told that I should have also booked a sight test.

Last week, a letter telling me that they were planning to turn off electricity to the entire village also failed to arrive. I learned of the powercut when everything stopped working*. These are only the letters that I know of. Who knows what other communications have been eaten by trolls?

I have 4 main email addresses for my 4 main identities, each hosted separately with a different provider, and using different anti-spam solutions. All of them lose email from time to time.

Anyone got a spare man with a cleft stick...?

* we have another power cut scheduled for tomorrow, but the letter about that arrived during the power cut last week, so at least I have matches and my camping stove to hand.
