Generally we only get the cheapest Google promotional gimmickry sent to us, so this does beg the question of whether out there somewhere, a big London agency has received, say, the Gift of Alstroemeria Seed*, the Gift of Unusual Basil*, or perhaps even, the Gift of Exotic Mushroom Spawn.

* a quick look at the Chiltern Seed Catalogue suggests that Alstroemeria plants and novelty basils are right up there when it comes to expensive seed.   I can see why with the novelty basil, every time I grew the weird exciting ones they always got greenfly.  Stick to plain old basil, is my advice.

Az is being very needy and demanding this evening (usually, this is Mollydog's role).  I'm not sure if he's missing Kya, or taking advantage of her absence.

In other news I set up a Google+ account to give it a go - but am fully expecting it to go the way of Buzz, Wave, the automatic moustache protecting device, and the serinette* and pass over and be forgotten.

* a type of barrel organ designed specifically for teaching birds to sing tunes other than those that come naturally.

Thinking over 'where I lived at various censuses' and the inaccuracy of finding the dogsitter, I googled the first house I remember living in.

Here it is in Google Streetview.

Google street view and maps seems at first glance, so comprehensive that you start to forget that the information was only put in there by human beings.  And probably those human beings are They Vurriners*, wot dun't understaand our Local Ways.

Dropped the dogs off for their test day with the dogsitter this morning, and found that the street that Google claimed  ran right next to the main road actually sort of flips round the back and turns into a private track backing onto fields.   Which is where New Dogsitter is located : no traffic noise at all.

New dogsitter seemed lovely, very down to earth and practical, and Az liked her.  Phew.

This isn't quite on the level of the postcode on the rural outskirts of Bratton Fleming that Google thinks is located in the central postoffice in Barnstaple, but it's still a pleasing mistake.

*this is a technical Westcountry term meaning 'someone who lives more than 20 miles from my house'.

In Google Analytics, the View By Hour function is turned off until there is a full day's data in there. When you first set the account up, you just get the 'view by default' dropdown which is greyed out.

Once the system contains a full day's data, the Google Analytics View By Hour option appears in a dropdown over the calendar - and voila! You can view your Google analytics hourly reports. The rest of the data is displayed ages before the hourly report option appears.

This information isn't in the help, nor is it noted anywhere I could find by Googling for it. This is bloody annoying. I'm noting it here in the hope that maybe someone else who can't work out where the damn thing is hidden can google and find out here.
