A few weeks ago I bought 2 pairs of jeans (both the same size) and some random socks. After one wash, one pair of jeans is now large and flappy, and the other pair of jeans is skin tight. How are you supposed to know which will do what???

Also, some of the socks have turned out to be those annoying sorts of socks that are fine until you put on wellies, then they fall down and gather irritatingly about your toes. This is why I never have the nerve to do a Pellinor and buy hundreds of identical socks. With my luck I'd end up with hundreds of welly-droopers.

I hate it when clothes change size in the wash, you can never tell what's going to happen to them.

I thought all socks did that annoying thing with wellies! I didn't realise it was only certain sorts of socks. Is there a consistent difference in fabric or style between the annoying and non-annoying ones?

I haven't been able to determine what makes the difference, but I definitely have some socks that don't do it, so there must be *something*.

Poor Pellinor. Only a few people are lucky enough to have their name immortalised in common parlance. Some people give us fillings between two slices of bread. Some give us ballpoint pens, or cleaning machines that such up dust. Some, indeed, give us the very Wellington boots that incite socks to be annoying. Pellinor, however, becomes proverbial as a brave but foolish purchaser of thousands of socks. (It started off as dozens, but oral tradition has multiplied the number. By 2011, he'll be famous as the man who bought 13827389 socks all in one go.)

... and in the creation of that legend, it must be acknowledged that you have played your part. :-D

This is why one buys one of something first, and only on finding that it is good does one buy the other 723 :-)

Ah, but how can you be sure that the other 723 are *exactly* the same? My floppy socks were supposed to be the same as others, but clearly there is some tiny difference!

Ah, you didn't say they were meant to be the same, you said they were random :-)
