Over the festive period I felt that I hadn't done much arting for a little while, so I put some effort into it.   Now my brain seems to have entirely tuned itself in to visual stuff and I don't seem to be able to concentrate on writing!  I am actually doing fairly well on concentrating on work for a change, though, so not all bad...

But it would be so nice to feel in charge of what my brain does instead of it just behaving like Rosie and randomly moving off in its own direction, towing me behind it without any real indication of why...

Also, I am getting to the end of my fully written, edited and beta-read chapters of Rexque Futurus, having just published Chapter 9 (and introduced Jormundgandr to begin the downfall of London).   I have made some progress on the unfinished chapters 12-15, but I could really do with getting going on those now, otherwise I shall have to break my chapter-a-week streak, which would be sad.

Anyway, here's a fairly quick watercolour Celegorm & Huan in Valinor.

I met these angry little ponies last year on Dartmoor, they galloped straight past me, intent upon their argument, and I had a chance to take quite a few photos of them, so I used one of the photos to make this.  I changed the colours and textures of the background to make them stand out.

Pp doesn't like the top bit, I think he feels its too abstract. I feel that it's OK because it's only there as a backdrop to the ponies.

I drew this quickly last night, and it is very small: Huan & Luthien.

Brusho is basically paint powder that you can sprinkle on the page and then mist with a plant mister (or other squirty bottle of choice) to create mad splodges. I like the contrast of putting dark ink with it, but the downside is that there's no undo - if you put the ink on, you are stuck with it, every line has to be right!

So, having saved Kibil-Tarag and won the victory for the Stiff-beard Dwarves, we spent some time asking around after Fankil, Demon of the North Wind and one of Morgoth's greatest servants, who was also, we think, responsible for the terrible White Blight, which was bringing famine to the Southern Lands, who we had been given the task of trying to defeat at the Council of Celeborn.

An ancient Stiff-beard king, King Horn son of Thulin had come up with a  way to bind Fankil for several Ages of the world using an ancient Dwarven Spell.  How exactly it worked, we didn't know, but there were some details. If they were right, we were hopeful we might get it to work with a bit of tinkering.

So, we set off by boat to the Whale's Graveyard, where somehow or other we had worked out we needed to contact Uin, King of Whales, for information. Possibly Angruin was absent at this point, or possibly he was failing to pay attention because Tinglin Redcap was playing the flute or something.

Anyway, we got there, after a brief encounter with menacing Nabkrok tribesmen in boats, and Sirithglor summoned Uin, who came... up.

He was a whale of considerable size.

And that was the end of the adventure for this year.

Previously...
We marched into the fort of Bosvik, a well-defended spot occupying the only pass through the mountains to the Stiff-beard capital. There were two sets of gates, and all traffic travelling through the pass must travel through both of them.
Here we are, just arrived at Bosvik.  You can just see the southern gate in the background, and the Dwarves who have come with us lined up in rows behind the tables in the main courtyard. The Northern gate is defended by the square tower and portcullis.

So, after the Council of Celeborn, we set off to Mordor to find out if anything was going on there.  Erestor, who had been at the council as Elrond's representative, came with us to see the Tower Kings. That's him in the brown robes next to the very spotty horse.

The Tower Kings are local kings who were given impressive Numenorean towers along the borders of Mordor, to live in after the War of the Elves with Sauron, by Ciryatur.  This was so they could keep an eye on Mordor in cause Sauron came back to visit his own Tower, Barad Dur.

Previously... in our now 4-year roleplaying campaign set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, we were sent into the Mysterious East  by King Gil-galad to try to find Sauron.  There we met a lot of different Elves and Men,  set up a new Land populated by Elves, Men, Bear-men, and basically anyone not too evil to be invited, and in our last adventure, we managed to capture one of the Nine Rings, and were faced with what on earth to do with it next.

So, last week, we re-convened.  In the real world, a year and a half had passed, but in Middle-earth, fifteen years had flown by.  Also, we had some changes of player characters, so the Dramatis Personae for this week were as follows:

So, we convened after 15 years at Edhellond, at the Council of Celeborn, convened to discuss our findings and work out what to do with the Ninth Ring.  There were a lot of VIPs there apart from us and I ran out of energy drawing everyone, but here from left to right are Hidek, Thorofin, Glorfindel, Celeborn, Galadriel, Thrandin and Sirithglor.

Prompt: 8 : Star
Maedhros, Maglor, Elros & Elrond see the Evening Star rise.  I started drawing this in rough pencil in my sketchbook, intending to do it on better paper, then I was too lazy so I just inked it where it was.
Prompt: 9 : Precious.  It seemed a bit obvious to do Sauron or the Ring, so this is an elderly Gimli and Celebrimbor having a pleasant conversation on Tol Eressea, to illustrate the idea ‘If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.’ (I was going to put Legolas in the background talking to a tree but I ran out of time.)

I'm going to try to keep up with Inktober, and do a drawing in ink for the official prompt every day!

Day 1: 'Poisonous' :

Ungoliant poisoning the Trees of Light for the prompt  ‘Poisonous’.

Day 2: Tranquility

But still the sunken stars appear

In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

Couldn’t make my first idea for this work in the time, so here’s a super-quick and wobbly inkpainting.

I have a pile of things that I made that were Secret, because people were writing stories for them.  But they are no longer Secret, and here they are!
Fimbrethil & Fangorn,  in their younger days, Ent and Entmaiden.
And then, an elder Fimbrethil meets a pair of hobbit children.

His lordship is over all the substances of which Arda is made. In the beginning he wrought much in fellowship with Manwë and Ulmo; and the fashioning of all lands was his labour. He is a smith and a master of all crafts, and he delights in works of skill, however small, as much as in the mighty building of old. His are the gems that lie deep in the Earth and the gold that is fair in the hand, no less than the walls of the mountains and the basins of the sea.

More acrylic pourings overpainted with a face, and this time I used Indian Ink in a spray bottle on the poured wet paint to do the darkness in the corners, which seems to have worked quite well.  I liked the effect enough that I bought some more indian ink, in yellow, blue and vermilion red, to put in my spare spray-bottles.  Ink is excellently cheap compared with paint and pouring medium (pouring medium is quite expensive for some reason), and I like the way ink squirts and drops.
