All our three cats are now getting along well.  Gothmog the Black and Nenya the White spend a lot of time playing together.

Fankil is still shyer, and panics if there's a loud noise, but he seems to be becoming the most snuggly of the three.   Gothmog and Nenya like playing exciting games (though Gothmog likes to snooze on PP's desk of an evening) but Fankil likes quiet moments and having his tummy tickled.  We can pick him up now, and he purrs and snuggles.

However, last night Some Cat jumped on the bed at ten to 6 in the morning, landing on Pp's face and causing him to splutter in alarm. Said cat then panicked and fled across Pp's face and then mine, leaving Pp with an impressive set of facial scratches, and me with a couple of small punctures to the cheek.  Neither of us was awake enough to really register which cat did this, but the MO definitely suggests it was Fankil.

Yesterday, Fankil let us stroke him, and this morning, he climbed on my lap in pursuit of a treat!

I must admit I wasn't sure we would ever get him to this point...

He is very handsome.

It is time to use the internet for its original and true purpose : showing off photos of our cats.
Here's Nenya sunbathing.

On the whole, the Project Cat Project seems to be going OK.

Cattitudes

We've had lots of little milestones with the three kitties.  Nenya (the white one) is slowly becoming more chilled and less likely to chase the other two and bop them.

Fankil (the grey one) was terrified of her for a while (despite them being so close when we saw them at the rescue!)  I think it was because Nenya didn't know Gothmog (the black one, and the youngest).  So, when she arrived, Gothmog tried to play a bit rough: Nenya was in no mood for that, having just been spayed and suffering from mastitis, so she chased Gothmog, who ran to Fankil, who hissed and hid.

So for a couple of months we have had something of a state of war within the house, Fankil and Gothmog hiding upstairs, and Nenya ruling the roost downstairs.  But things have got easier since Nenya has been allowed outside (and has discovered that the outside is the realm of the Giant Next-Door Cats, who are all about twice her size.)  Also, Nenya does actually like cats, and I think she got a bit lonely.  So we have been trying to encourage peace, and basically not spitting and tearing around the place like tiny furious loons in hot pursuit.

Today for the first time, Fankil went outside.  I saw Gothmog leading him through the living room and then out through the open door (because it was sunny this morning I had the door open so the cats could dot in and out.) I was a bit worried that Fankil was going to just vanish, but no, he and Gothmog played with leaves for a little bit on the patio, then they came back in.   Nenya has worked out how to use the catflaps, but Gothmog and Fankil haven't, yet.

And now they are playing in the livingroom, and Fankil just came and sat on the sofa next to me for a bit!  Now he's gone a little way away, but he's still sitting on the sofa next to Rosie.  This is very fine progress. I admit at one point we were starting to wonder if we would ever see Fankil, and then if we could possibly get all three to actually get along.  But things are looking good now.

Fankil kitty has been slowly emerging.  First we started seeing him a bit more in Pp's study, rather than being wedged behind the printer cabinet all the time.  So we decided to let him out for a bit.  It took him a few days to dare to do more than venture just past the door then run away,  but he's now got to the stage where he's racing around the house playing with Gothmog.  He's still pretty wary of us, but I've seen him sitting on the sofa with Rosie.  This morning he even ran through the living room in broad daylight!  Sadly I didn't have my camera to hand.

Here they are this evening.  I had put food out, and of course Gothmog had to eat first.  See Fankil politely waiting for her to finish.  She's definitely the boss despite being smaller.

We have... decided to adopt another cat.  When Fankil was at the rescue, his best buddy was a little white cat who had come in pregnant.  They were obviously very close when we met Fankil at the rescue (he tried to hide under her and trod on her tiny kittens!) Now the kittens have got big and she's ready to be spayed and find a home, so we decided that we'd offer her one and reunite them.   I wonder what Gothmog will think of her?

Last year's roleplaying dealt with the problem of finding Fankil, Demon of the North Wind.

Now, we are faced with the problem of finding Fankil the cat.  Things had seemed to be going pretty well with Fankil, he was getting more confident and easier to spot -  so we decided to encourage him to leave the small room he's been living in and explore the rest of the house.

This may have been a mistake.  For a while, he shelved himself on shelf v7 in the Shop on the Borderlands, which made him conveniently easy to check on.  But now he seems to have found some more secret hiding place and we have no idea where it is.  He is still in the house, because we heard him last night, eating.  But where he is lurking, we have no idea.

We went over to my mother's house for Christmas this year.  Rosie was much delighted by this decision, she likes being invited out to lunch, sitting on my mother's sofas for a change and snuggling the humans.  Mum's cat Pudding is less keen on a visiting sighthound, but he did make several brief solemn appearances, though I didn't manage to photograph him.

Below the cut: Pp in his Christmas jumper with the Christmas puddings on it, which has seen much wear this year:

The festive season has been much enlivened by Gothmog kitten, who is now vastly confident, hilarious, and very very fast.  Our remaining problem with her is to prevent her from molesting poor Rosie for her own amusement.  They shared a bed yesterday, but poor Rosie is not keen on the rough kitten play of Awake & Riotous Gothmog who races up to the top of the big cat tree and flings herself joyously at a dog ten times her size...

Poor Fankil is still in hiding!  But I bought Pp an infra-red motion-sensitive camera for Christmas, and so at least we can see him.  He seems to mostly get up when we go to bed!

Gothmog kitten keeps stealing the Shop on the Borderlands packing peanuts and carrying them one by one down the stairs and into the living room to kill.  The preferred killing zone for packing peanuts is under Pp's desk, which personally I think is quite a compliment to him.  She also likes to nap next to him on his desk once she has slain a peanut.

We have a huge box of packing peanuts.  This might take some time.

So far, no signs of any desire to climb the Christmas tree.  We brought in the big cat tree from the porch as well, but so far she hasn't climbed that either.  Am faintly disappointed that I bought a huge box of tiny plastic christmas tree baubles, hoping a kitten would steal them entertainingly, and she has completely ignored them.  Still, the packing peanut thing is pretty funny.

Fankil continues invisible.  We continue to propriate him intermittently with small sacrifices, such as kitten food and catnip toys strewn hopefully before his altar, and brief, hopeful prayers.  Also, I tried reading him a story  (Rosemary Sutcliff's Robin Hood).  If we are favoured, the small hissing god will sneak from his place to accept our offerings when we aren't looking.

Last time we tried shutting Gothmog in the study with Fankil, they had an argument in the middle of the night and I had to get up and check Gothmog was all right (I assume Fankil is, because after all he is a lot bigger than little Gothmog, and anyway, I can't really check him since he's invisible.)   Gothmog was fine but shot out of the door very firmly, so now Gothmog has the roam of the livingroom overnight, and Fankil is still in the study, because at least in the study we know where he is.   We persist!
